Women's Volleyball Closes Regular Season at Skidmore Invitational

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team wraps up its regular season from Friday-Saturday, Nov. 1-2, at the Skidmore Invitational in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. While there, the Hawks square off with Union (N.Y.) College at 4 p.m. on Friday before matching up with Kean University and host Skidmore College on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.

Records: New Paltz owns a 16-match win streak and a 28-5 overall record (9-0 SUNYAC). Union (N.Y.) is 20-8 overall and 9-3 in the Liberty League. Kean possesses a 21-9 overall mark and is 5-3 in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action. Skidmore is 10-16 overall and 3-9 in the Liberty League.

Scouting the Hawks: New Paltz finished its SUNYAC schedule unbeaten and will host the 2013 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Volleyball Championship Tournament from Friday-Sunday, Nov. 8-10, at the Hawk Center as the event's top seed… The Hawks were ranked at No. 5 in the first release of NCAA Division III's New York Regional Rankings… New Paltz's 16-match winning streak, which dates back to Sept. 27, is its second-longest in program history… The Hawks added to that streak on Wednesday, beating Vassar College, 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-9), in a non-conference clash… Senior setter Marissa King is 106 assists away from breaking the program's career record in the statistical category.

Scouting the Dutchwomen: Union (N.Y.) was ranked at No. 8 in the initial release of NCAA Division III's New York Regional Rankings… The Dutchwomen, who finished at 9-3 in the Liberty League, punched their ticket intot he Liberty League Championship Tournament from Nov. 8-9 at Clarkson University… Union (N.Y.) had an eight-match winning streak snapped on Saturday against Clarkson University, as it went 2-1 in the final weekend of Liberty League play… The Dutchwomen beat the Rochester Institute of Technology, 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-22), on Friday before downing St. Lawrence University, 3-2 (24-26, 19-25, 26-24, 25-16, 15-7), on Saturday morning… Union (N.Y.) was unable to carry that momentum into its final match of the weekend against Clarkson, losing, 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-22).

Last Meeting vs. Union (N.Y.): (Box Score): New Paltz knocked off Union (N.Y.), 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 30-28), during the Skidmore Tournament on Oct. 27, 2012, in Saratoga Springs, N.Y… The Hawks wound up going 4-0 that weekend and took home the tournament's title… Then senior outside hitter Michelle Jacobson and then freshman outside hitter Becca Borquist each boasted double-doubles in the win… Jacobson finished with 18 kills and 15 digs, while Borquist totaled 11 kills and 10 digs… Then junior setter Marissa King kept the offense running with 40 assists and added 18 digs to complete the double-double.

Scouting the Cougars: Kean saw a four-match winning streak snapped on Saturday, losing to Richard Stockton College and New York University… The Cougars put up a fight against the Ospreys in their 12 p.m. match, falling by a 3-2 (25-15, 25-20, 22-25, 18-25, 15-7) final… NYU then pinned a 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-19) setback on Kean later on in the day… The Cougars, being 5-3 in the NJAC, have clinched a spot in the conference's championship tournament... Kean leads the NJAC in service aces per set (2.63), and senior middle hitter Kaitlyn Hansen leads the conference in hitting percentage (.379).

Last Meeting vs. Kean: (Box Score): New Paltz beat Kean, 3-0 (30-14, 30-9, 30-4), when the two teams last met at the Hawks Invitational on Sept. 14, 2007… In that match, then senior right side Kim Braga paced the Hawk attack with seven kills and a .357 hitting percentage, while then senior setter Katie Becofsky dished out 16 assists… Then junior libero Nicole Mercadante posted 12 digs.

Scouting the Thoroughbreds: Skidmore notched a Liberty League win on Saturday afternoon, besting the Rochester Institute of Technology, 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-21), in Rochester, N.Y… Senior middle hitter Corinne Palmer keyed the offense with 16 kills and a .419 hitting percentage, while freshman outside hitter/defensive specialist Marcela Familiar tallied 23 digs… Currently, Skidmore is ranked second in the Liberty League in digs per set (15.45), and Palmer leads the league in hitting percentage at .352.

Last Meeting vs. Skidmore: (Box Score): New Paltz topped Skidmore, 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-21), when the two teams met earlier this year on Sept. 6… Sophomore outside hitter Becca Borquist pounded out 20 kills, while freshman middle hitter Morgan Roessler and junior outside hitter Alli Coleman added 13 and 11 kills, respectively… Senior setter Marissa King doled out 50 assists, while Coleman posted five block assists… Skidmore was led offensively by junior outside hitter Aria Goodman's 12 kills, and senior defensive specialist/setter Emma Wilberg totaled 29 assists… Freshman outside hitter/defensive specialist Marcela Familiar provided 18 digs.

Head Coaches: New Paltz is led by 12th-year head coach Matt Giufre, who has guided the Hawks to three NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship Tournament appearances and one SUNYAC title. Union (N.Y.) is piloted by third-year head coach Melissa DeRan. Kean is coached by Don Perkins, who is in his fifth year. Skidmore is mentored by 19th-year head coach Hilda Arrechea.

What's Next: New Paltz hosts either fourth-seeded SUNY Plattsburgh or fifth-seeded SUNY Potsdam in the semifinal round of the SUNYAC Volleyball Championship Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 6 p.m. Union (N.Y.) squares off with St. Lawrence University in the opening round of the Liberty League Tournament on Friday, Nov. 8, at 5 p.m. Kean meets up with an opponent to be determined in the opening round of the NJAC Tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. Skidmore did not qualify for the Liberty League Tournament and sees its season come to a close after this weekend.
