Printable BracketNEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team is looking to make a run at its second NCAA regional championship in program history from Friday-Sunday, Nov. 15-17, as the Hawks visit the campus of Clarkson University for an eight-team NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Tournament regional that includes many familiar faces in the field. New Paltz, which is making its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance and its second straight, faces off with Colby-Sawyer College in the first round on Friday at 3 p.m.
Pricing: Ticket prices are $6 for general admission and $4 for students. Children ages 3-12 are $3.
Records: New Paltz enters Saturday's match with a 32-6 overall record, while Colby-Sawyer is 22-10 overall.
Statistical Leaders: New Paltz has been grateful this season for a pair of seniors at the specialty positions of setter and libero…
Marissa King leads the SUNYAC in assists per set (10.06), while
Carrie Hack leads the conference in digs per set (5.01)… King and Hack are also the program's all-time record holders in their respective specialty… King holds the program mark for career assists (4,548), while Hack owns the program mark for career digs (2,392)… King is ranked 28th in NCAA Division III in assists per set…
Becca Borquist ranks second in the SUNYAC in kills per set (3.46), while
Morgan Roessler is second in the conference in hitting percentage (.317)… Roessler paces the team in blocking with 0.92 blocks per set, while King boasts the Hawks' best per-set average in service aces with 0.48 per set… Both Roessler and King rank fourth in the SUNYAC in those respective statistical categories.
We've Been Here Before—Four Times, to be Exact: New Paltz is no stranger to the NCAA Tournament, making its fourth overall appearance and its second straight… The Hawks qualified for the 2013 tournament by means of a Pool "C" bid… They gained entry into the tournament with a Pool "C" bid in 2008 and 2012, but in 2009, the Hawks made the NCAA Tournament by virtue of gaining the SUNYAC's automatic bid after winning the conference title… All-time, New Paltz is 6-3 at the NCAA Tournament, and it advanced as far as the national quarterfinals, which it achieved in 2008… This marks the second year in a row that the Hawks have traveled to Potsdam, N.Y., to compete in the Clarkson Regional.
No Cupcakes Here: New Paltz's schedule has adequately prepared it for the road ahead, as it has faced eight teams this season that qualified for the NCAA Tournament… Against those eight teams this year, the Hawks are 4-5… Their biggest win of the season, however, came against then-No. 23 Williams College on Oct. 9, beating the Ephs in five sets at the Hawk Center… The Ephs (25-4) won the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and are the top seed in a New England-based regional… The only one of those teams that the Hawks played twice is Buffalo State… New Paltz went 1-1 this year against the Bengals.
Statistically Speaking in the SUNYAC: The Hawks rank toward the top of every statistical category in the SUNYAC… They lead the SUNYAC in assists per set (11.44), kills per set (12.47), service aces per set (2.44), opponent kills per set (9.18), opponent assists per set (8.18) and opponent hitting percentage (.116)… New Paltz ranks second in the conference in digs per set (17.78), hitting percentage (.190) and opponent service aces (1.41).
Summary of the SUNYAC Tournament: New Paltz hosted the six-team SUNYAC Volleyball Tournament from Nov. 8-10 at the Hawk Center, holding the tournament's top seed… In the quarterfinal round on Friday, Nov. 8, New Paltz and second-seeded Buffalo State received a bye, while sixth-seeded SUNY Cortland and fourth-seeded SUNY Plattsburgh advanced past third-seeded SUNY Fredonia and fifth-seeded SUNY Potsdam, respectively… In the semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 9, Buffalo State cruised past Cortland, 3-0, while New Paltz edged Plattsburgh, 3-2… After winning the first set, 28-26, in the championship match on Sunday, Nov. 10, the Hawks were bested in the final three frames, falling by a 3-1 final to Buffalo State… The Bengals earned the SUNYAC's automatic qualifier, and it marked Buffalo State's first-ever conference title in women's volleyball.
All-Tournament Selections:
Carrie Hack and
Marissa King both played extremely well in their final two matches at the Hawk Center, and as a result of their efforts, they were tabbed to the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team.
All-Conference Teams: New Paltz cleaned up in the SUNYAC's postseason awards, landing five student-athletes on All-SUNYAC teams… In addition, 12th-year head coach
Matt Giufre was named the SUNYAC Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career, and
Morgan Roessler was picked as the SUNYAC Rookie of the Year…
Marissa King and
Becca Borquist were named to the All-SUNYAC First Team,
Carrie Hack and Roessler were tabbed to the All-SUNYAC Second Team and
Katy Herbst was chosen to the All-SUNYAC Third Team.
About Coach Giufre: Head coach
Matt Giufre is in his 12th year at the controls of the New Paltz women's volleyball program, and he has fashioned a career overall record of 325-143… Giufre has more wins to his credit than any other coach in any other sports in the history of New Paltz… He is a four-time SUNYAC Coach of the Year (2004, 2006, 2009 and 2013), and he has guided the program to four NCAA Tournament appearances and one SUNYAC championship… Since 2004, New Paltz has had no fewer than 26 wins in a season under his stewardship… Prior to New Paltz, Giufre spent four years as an assistant women's volleyball coach at SUNY Cortland… He earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Cortland in 1998, and he received a master's degree in health education from Cortland in 2002.
Scouting the Chargers: Colby-Sawyer (22-10) won its third straight North Atlantic Conference (NAC) title on Saturday and gained the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships… In the history of the program, Colby-Sawyer has captured six NAC titles… This marks the Chargers' sixth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and they are 3-5 all-time at the NCAA's postseason event… Emilee McBride leads the offense with a NAC-leading 2.79 kills per set, and Ally Le-Bruno paces the defense with the NAC's top digs-per-set average (4.94)… Laura Smolinski helps drive the attack with a conference leading 9.51 assists per set… Colby-Sawyer and New Paltz have met just one time before, as the Hawks prevailed, 3-1, over the Chargers on Oct. 6, 2012, at Springfield College's Tom Hay Women's Volleyball Invitational… The Chargers are led by fifth-year head coach Brett Sayer, who has guided Colby-Sawyer to its three straight NAC titles and its three straight NCAA Tournament appearances.
What's Next: The winner of the New Paltz-Colby-Sawyer match will square off with either Richard Stockton College (30-5) or Rivier College (27-8) in the second round on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 3:30 p.m. The regional championship, which will determine who goes on to the national quarterfinals at DeVos Fieldhouse in Holland, Mich., is set for 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17.
