Softball Downs No. 6 Eastern Connecticut St., Falls to Kalamazoo

CLERMONT, Fla. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team (2-3) split a pair of contests at the NTC Spring Games on Saturday, beating No. 6 Eastern Connecticut State University, 6-4, before falling to Kalamazoo College, 7-5.

Against Eastern Connecticut State, senior Melissa Liotta (Brentwood, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) ignited the attack with a 2-for-4 outing at the dish. Sophomore Marissa Monaco (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) batted 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored, while junior Chelsea Kull (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) went 1-for-3 with three RBI and a walk. Senior Amber Carozza (Milton, N.Y./Marlboro) earned the win in the circle, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out one. Freshman Katie Rutcofsky (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy) notched the save.

Against Kalamazoo, Liotta batted 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Kull recorded a triple and an RBI in her 1-for-3 performance at the plate. Sophomore Erika Traina (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) was saddled with the loss in the circle, scattering 11 hits and permitting seven runs.

New Paltz continues action at the NTC Spring Games tomorrow, facing the University of Southern Maine at 9 a.m. before squaring off with Oberlin College at 1 p.m.
