Women’s Lacrosse Suffers 15-4 Setback to Vassar

KINGSTON, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team (2-1) suffered its first loss of the 2013 campaign on Saturday afternoon at Dietz Stadium, falling to non-conference Vassar College (3-0) by a 15-4 final.

Vassar held the edge in nearly every statistical category. The Brewers outshot the Hawks, 28-21. Vassar went 15-for-19 on clear attempts, while New Paltz went 12-for-19. The Brewers controlled 12 draws to the Hawks' nine, while Vassar held a 28-22 cushion in ground balls.

Sophomore midfielder Lianne Valdivia (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) scored a team-high two goals, while junior attack player Talia Tesler (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) and senior attack player Erin Tornatore (Glen Cove, N.Y./North Shore) each added a marker. Sophomore goalkeeper Jackie Ulanoff (Northport, N.Y./Northport) scooped up a game-high five ground balls, while sophomore defender Erin Taylor (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) caused a game-high four turnovers.

For Vassar, Dara Davis led the way with four goals and one assist, while Marissa Reilly and Elizabeth Annis each chipped in with three goals and one assist. Phoebe Tzannes (2), Katherine Stegmann (1), Isabelle Goldstein (1) and Sophia Rosetti (1) all scored for the Brewers as well. Goldstein came away with a game-high four assists, while Leigh Baldwin and Nicole Magney helped out with one assist each.

In goal, Ulanoff made eight saves, while her counterpart, Katharine Pula, turned aside 10 shots.

New Paltz opened scoring 4:41 into the contest, as Valdivia scored unassisted. Vassar netted three straight goals before Tesler made it a 3-2 game with 18:03 to go in the first half. Vassar closed the first stanza with four unanswered goals—the last of which came with the woman advantage—to take a 7-2 lead into the intermission.

Vassar put the game out of reach early in the second half, as it scored six straight goals in the first 10 minutes to enact the running clock. New Paltz received goals from Valdivia and Tornatore before Davis and Rosetti closed out the game with two straight markers for the Brewers.

New Paltz looks to right the ship on Monday, March 25, as it faces non-conference Mount Saint Mary College at 6 p.m. at Dietz Stadium in Kingston, N.Y.
