Women’s Lacrosse Knocks Off Ramapo, 20-4

Box Score

MAHWAH, N.J. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team (4-5) scored 10 goals in each half, pinning a 20-4 non-conference setback on Ramapo College (4-8) Thursday afternoon at Ramapo's Athletic Center. The Hawks had a single-game record broken for the second time in as many contests, as junior attack player Talia Tesler (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) collected a program-record-setting 10 points off six goals and four assists. The previous mark of nine was achieved three times, with the most recent occurrence coming from sophomore midfielder Lianne Valdivia (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) on Tuesday against Farmingdale State College.

Ramapo challenged New Paltz early, as the two teams battled back and forth in the first 10 minutes of play. Lindsay Hughes opened scoring for the Roadrunners 52 seconds into the contest, while Valdivia leveled the tally with a free-position goal nearly two minutes later. After a four-minute scoring drought, Ramapo claimed the lead with a Lauren Schmidt marker, but the Hawks scored back-to-back goals from Valdivia and sophomore midfielder Julia Johnson (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) to take a 3-2 advantage. Hughes wound up scoring twice in 10 seconds to give the Roadrunners a 4-3 edge, and that would be the last of Ramapo's scoring throughout the rest of the game. New Paltz netted 17 straight goals to end the tilt.

New Paltz dominated the stat sheet, holding a 34-22 edge in shots and an 18-9 cushion in ground balls. The Roadrunners did control 14 draws to the Hawks' 12, but New Paltz converted 11 of its 12 clear attempts.

Beyond Tesler, sophomore attack player Kelsey Healy (Central Islip, N.Y./Bay Shore) netted four goals, while Valdivia scored three. Freshman attack player Alexa Vitale (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall Central) chipped in with a pair of markers, while sophomore midfielder Fatima Ismail (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook), senior attack player Erin Tornatore (Glen Cove, N.Y./North Shore), Johnson, junior midfielder Mariam Ismail (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) and sophomore midfielder Carissa Citro (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) each boasted one goal. F. Ismail and Tesler tied for the game-high in assists with four apiece, while Healy and Citro each dished out two helpers. Valdivia finished with one assist. Tornatore was strong off the draw, managing 10 draw controls, while Citro and Tornatore each scooped up three ground balls.

For Ramapo, Hughes took 16 shots but only managed three goals. Schmidt also scored for the Roadrunners. Hughes proved to be Tornatore's nemesis off the draw, tallying a game-high 12 draw controls.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jackie Ulanoff (Northport, N.Y./Northport) played a brilliant game in net, turning aside 12 shots in the win. Reagan Vier was saddled with the loss for Ramapo, making eight saves.

New Paltz hosts The College at Brockport on Saturday, April 13, at 1 p.m. in its second-to-last home game of the 2013 campaign.
