Tornatore Records 100th Career Point in Women’s Lacrosse’s 22-16 Loss to Brockport

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Senior attack player Erin Tornatore (Glen Cove, N.Y./North Shore) eclipsed the 100-point plateau for her career by scoring five goals and adding two assists, but the State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team (4-6, 0-4 SUNYAC) was unable to overcome a six-goal halftime deficit in a 22-16 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) loss to The College at Brockport (9-3, 4-1 SUNYAC) on Saturday afternoon at the Turf Field.

Tornatore came into Saturday's game needing just one point—which includes either a goal or an assist—and she finished the day with 106 points for her career (83 goals, 23 assists). She joins an exclusive club of New Paltz women's lacrosse players, as just three other student-athletes in the history of the program have achieved that milestone.

Sophomore midfielder Carissa Citro (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) tied the single-game program record in caused turnovers with six, as Tornatore also caused six turnovers during her freshman season against Greensboro College.

New Paltz challenged Brockport for the majority of the first half. Tornatore scored with the woman advantage three minutes into the contest, but Brockport answered with three straight goals, and a marker by Emily Zartman gave the Golden Eagles a 3-1 lead with 23:02 left in the first half. Junior attack player Talia Tesler (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) and Tornatore netted back-to-back goals to tie the game, and each team traded markers to knot the score at 5-all. Katie Sullivan and Zartman pushed the Brockport edge to two, but sophomore midfielder Lianne Valdivia (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) countered with a goal of her own less than a minute later. The Golden Eagles closed the first half on a 5-0 run, and they entered halftime with a 12-6 advantage.

It appeared as though Brockport was going to cruise to victory, as it scored six of the first nine goals of the second half to mount a nine-goal cushion at 18-9. New Paltz staged a rally, however, which began with consecutive goals from sophomore midfielder Fatima Ismail (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) and Tesler. After a goal by Brockport's Alyssa Scordo, Tesler answered with a marker just 31 seconds later, but the Golden Eagles pushed the edge back out to eight with a Sullivan score with 6:58 to go in regulation. Citro scored twice and sophomore midfielder Julia Johnson (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) scored once in a 3-0 Hawk rally, which made it a five-goal game with 2:54 remaining on the clock. Sullivan and Ciara McKeon extinguished the spurt, however, scoring a pair of goals in the final 2:29 of play. Tornatore spelled out the final tally by finding the back of the net with 13 seconds left.

Brockport possessed a commanding 50-28 edge in shots, and the Golden Eagles also won the draw control battle (23-17) and the ground ball battle (39-34). Brockport went 20-for-23 on clear attempts, while New Paltz went 16-for-26.

Tesler paced the Hawk offense with a game-high six goals, while Tornatore netted five. Citro scored twice, while Ismail, Valdivia and Johnson each scored once. Tornatore and Citro led the team in assists with two apiece, while Tesler, Valdivia and sophomore attack player Kelsey Healy (Central Islip, N.Y./Bay Shore) each boasted one helper. Citro grabbed seven draw controls and six ground balls, while sophomore goalkeeper Jackie Ulanoff (Northport, N.Y./Northport) finished with six ground balls.

For Brockport, 10 different players scored. Sullivan led the way with five goals, while Hailey Boronczyk chipped in with four markers. Zartman (3), McKeon (2), Sarah Brown (2) and Makensie Schuber (2) also netted multiple goals for the Golden Eagles. Colleen Hathaway scooped up a game-high nine ground balls, while Schuber controlled six draws.

Ulanoff suffered the loss in net despite a 17-save effort, while Remle Harr gained the win after making six stops.

New Paltz takes to the road on Tuesday, April 16, as it faces SUNY Oneonta at 4 p.m.
