Women’s Lacrosse Unable to Overcome Halftime Deficit in 12-7 Loss to Oswego

Box Score

OSWEGO, N.Y. – After trailing 9-3 at the half, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team (4-9, 0-7 SUNYAC) was unable to overcome the deficit, falling by a 12-7 final to SUNY Oswego (7-7, 4-3 SUNYAC) on Tuesday afternoon at South Athletic Field in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game.

Senior attack player Erin Tornatore (Glen Cove, N.Y./North Shore) initiated scoring, finding the back of the net just 39 seconds into the contest. That would be the Hawks' final lead of the game, as Oswego mounted a five-goal run that resulted in a 5-1 Laker advantage. Freshman attack player Alexa Vitale (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall Central) stopped the scoring spree with a marker midway through the period, but Esther Gabriel scored twice to push the Oswego edge to 7-2. Following a goal by sophomore midfielder Julia Johnson (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point), Lindsey Eggers and Courtney Cosentino each scored for the Lakers in the final 3:15 of the first half to swell the tally to 9-3 in favor of the home team.

New Paltz made a comeback attempt in the second stanza, with Tornatore and junior attack player Talia Tesler (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) scoring in the first 10 minutes to draw within four goals. Gabriel netted Oswego's first goal of the second half before Tesler and sophomore midfielder Lianne Valdivia (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) pulled the Hawks within three at 10-7. Lindsey Eggers, however, prevented New Paltz from getting any closer, as she tallied two markers in the final five minutes of the game to spell out the final score of 12-7.

Oswego held a 42-23 edge in shots, while each team committed 23 turnovers. The Lakers owned a 15-6 advantage in draw controls and a 49-28 cushion in ground balls, too. New Paltz went 18-of-25 on clear attempts, while Oswego went 13-for-14.

Tesler and Tornatore paced the Hawk attack with two goals each, while Vitale, Valdivia and Johnson scored one goal apiece. Tesler added two assists, while sophomore midfielder Carissa Citro (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) provided one helper. Valdivia grabbed a game-high-tying seven ground balls, while sophomore attack player Kelsey Healy (Central Islip, N.Y./Bay Shore) controlled four draws.

Eggers and Gabriel scored four goals each to lead the Lakers, while Jayme McCreary scored twice. Cosentino and Michelle Ruskey also found the back of the net for Oswego. Erannan Shattuck and Gabriel were the lone Lakers to notch assists, dishing out one each. Eggers tied Valdivia for the game-high in ground balls with seven, while Gabriel had 10 draw controls and three caused turnovers.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jackie Ulanoff (Northport, N.Y./Northport) suffered the loss in net, making 20 saves, while her counterpart, Nikki Greco, turned aside nine shots in the winning effort.

New Paltz closes out its season on Saturday, April 27, as it visits SUNY Geneseo for a 1 p.m. SUNYAC game.
