GENESEO, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team (4-10, 0-8 SUNYAC) finished out its 2013 season with a 21-3 loss to SUNY Geneseo (11-4, 5-3 SUNYAC) on Saturday afternoon in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest at Saratoga Field.
New Paltz made it a game in the first two minutes of the tilt. After Kylie Caesar initiated scoring for Geneseo, sophomore midfielder
Carissa Citro (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) scored for the Hawks to make it a 1-all score. The Blue Knights, however, rattled off 10 straight goals, and the final marker, which was buried by Caroline Buonocore, enacted the running clock with just 16:31 remaining in the first half. Junior attack player
Talia Tesler (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) broke up the scoring spree and the running clock with a goal less than a minute later, but Geneseo went off for six unanswered scores to close the first half. The Blue Knights entered the intermission with a commanding 17-2 lead.
Geneseo took its foot off the gas pedal in the second half, as the first 15 minutes of the stanza went without scoring. The Blue Knights netted three goals before New Paltz scored its only marker of the half courtesy of a Tesler score with 7:46 to go in regulation. Caitlin Lally spelled out the final score with a goal a minute later, and Geneseo officially locked up the No. 3 seed in the 2013 SUNYAC Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament. The Blue Knights will face off with second-seeded SUNY Fredonia in the semifinal round on Friday, May 3, at 3 p.m. on the campus of SUNY Cortland.
Geneseo dominated the stat sheet, holding a 29-15 edge in shots, a 20-6 cushion in draw controls and a 9-8 advantage in ground balls. The Hawks went 8-for-12 of clear attempts, while the Blue Knights went a perfect 12-for-12.
Tesler scored twice to lead New Paltz's offense, while Citro found the back of the net once. Senior attack player
Erin Tornatore (Glen Cove, N.Y./North Shore) helped the Hawks' defensive efforts with two caused turnovers.
For Geneseo, 10 different players scored, led by Buonocore's five-goal onslaught. Jen Costanza and Emily Haggerty also had prolific offensive days with three goals each. Lea Paris led all players with two assists, while Haggerty came up with six draw controls.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Jackie Ulanoff (Northport, N.Y./Northport) made five saves in the losing effort, while Julie Bernatzky and Laura Passamonte totaled three stops each for Geneseo. Bernatzky earned the win, drawing the start and playing for 41:29 total before handing the reins off to Passamonte.
Despite going 0-8 in conference play in 2013, the Hawks found a silver lining in games outside of the SUNYAC, as they went 4-2 in non-conference contests.
