Box Score
FREDONIA, N.Y. – Despite trailing by only three goals at halftime, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team (3-4, 0-3 SUNYAC) was unable to replicate its first-half output in the second stanza, as the Hawks fell by a 21-12 final to SUNY Fredonia (9-0, 2-0 SUNYAC) on Saturday afternoon in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest.
New Paltz scored the first goal of the contest, as junior attack player
Talia Tesler (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) found the back of the net. Fredonia went on to score five of the next six goals, though, and a marker by Rachael Reinis with 23:27 to go in the first half made it a 5-2 game. Following a goal by senior attack player
Erin Tornatore (Glen Cove, N.Y./North Shore), Katie Kleine managed back-to-back scores. Tesler countered with two unanswered goals of her own, but a pair of Fredonia markers from Kaila Fox and Marissa Cussins pushed the Blue Devil advantage back out to four at 9-5. The two teams traded goals down the stretch in the first half, and a Tornatore tally with 5:28 to go in the period provided the halftime score of 11-8.
Reinis opened scoring in the second half just 40 seconds into the new stanza before sophomore midfielder
Carissa Citro (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) found the back of the net to bring the Hawks back within three. Fredonia, however, put the game out of reach by netting five straight goals. New Paltz inched closer by accounting for two of the next three markers, but the Blue Devils outscored the Hawks, 3-1, down the stretch to claim the 21-12 victory.
Fredonia held a 38-24 margin in shots, and it also outgained New Paltz in draw controls (19-16) and ground balls (22-14).
Tesler keyed the Hawk attack with five goals on six shots, while Tornatore added three scores. Sophomore attack player
Kelsey Healy (Central Islip, N.Y./Bay Shore) found the back of the net twice, while sophomore midfielder
Julia Johnson (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and Citro each scored once. Citro led the team in assists with two. Sophomore midfielder
Lianne Valdivia (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) helped lead the team on the draw, as she had six draw controls.
For Fredonia, Kleine recorded 13 points off four goals and nine assists, while Reinis boasted nine points (six goals, three assists). Marissa Cussins also aided the Blue Devil attack with five goals. Cussins and Kleine tallied seven draw controls apiece, while Reinis caused three turnovers.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Jackie Ulanoff (Northport, N.Y./Northport) suffered the loss in net for the Hawks, turning aside 10 shots, while Fredonia's Casey Chiesa gained the win by making seven saves.
New Paltz will look to get back in the win column on Tuesday, April 9, as it hosts Farmingdale State College in a 3 p.m. non-conference game.
