ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team (5-3) finished the weekend 4-0 at the University of Rochester Volleyball Invitational, and as a result, the Hawks won the tournament's title as the only undefeated team at the event. On Saturday, New Paltz beat Hamilton College, 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-17), before downing host Rochester, 3-1 (19-25, 25-11, 25-23, 25-10), in the nightcap.
Against Hamilton, sophomore outside hitter Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) floored13 kills and hit .481 for the match, while senior setter Marissa King (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) dished out 28 assists. Senior libero Carrie Hack (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) came up with 23 digs in the three-set match, while King and Borquist each had two total blocks.
In the Hawks' match against Rochester, Borquist was the primary offensive option once again, as she registered 16 terminations. King handed out 33 assists, while Hack led New Paltz in the back row with 21 digs. Junior outside hitter Alli Coleman (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton Central) set the program record for single-match block assists in a four-set match, recording seven. She erased the former standard of six, which Katy Jerome achieved on Sept. 26, 2002, against SUNY Plattsburgh. Coleman also had one solo block to finish with eight total blocks for the contest.
Following the conclusion of the tournament, Borquist and freshman middle hitter Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
With the pair of wins, head coach Matt Giufre pushed his career record to 298-140, and he has the potential to achieve his 300th victory on day one of the Hawks Invitational, which runs from Friday-Saturday, Sept. 13-14, at the Hawk Center. Only two other active State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) women's volleyball coaches—SUNY Fredonia's Geoff Braun and SUNY Oneonta's Colleen Cashman—have achieved that plateau. Of note, Cashman won her 300th match as Oneonta's head coach last night.
