Women’s Swimming Edges Oneonta, 110-95, in Dual Meet

Meet Results

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team was pushed to its limits on Saturday afternoon, edging SUNY Oneonta, 110-95, in a dual meet.

New Paltz won five individual events and posted just three second-place individual finishes, as Oneonta provided both top-end talent and depth to challenge the Hawks throughout.

New Paltz moves to 6-2 overall and competes at the Skidmore Sprint Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 1 p.m. in its final tune-up before the 2014 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Swimming & Diving Championships. Oneonta drops to 5-2 overall and next competes as a full team on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 1 p.m. against SUNY Cortland.

Senior Chelsea Allocco (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and sophomore Cassidy Griger (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown Central) each captured a pair of individual events. Allocco paced the field in the 1,000 freestyle (10:56.85) and the 500 freestyle (5:19.09), while Griger posted the top standard in the 200 freestyle (2:00.16) and the 100 freestyle (54.72). Allocco established pool records in both of her events, while Griger's swim in the 200 freestyle also broke a facility standard.

Junior Samantha Granan (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt) also contributed toward the Hawks' cause with a first-place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:17.68).

The Hawks avenged a runner-up finish in the 400 medley relay by winning the 400 freestyle relay at the end of the meet. Sophomore Ella Graffin (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca), Allocco, junior Kat Buyes (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./John Jay) and senior Victoria Scalise (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) combined for a winning time of 3:45.70.

Second-place performances came from Scalise in the 50 freestyle (25.85), sophomore Kim Kallansrude (Muttontown, N.Y./Jericho) in the 200 butterfly (2:19.59) and Granan in the 200 breaststroke (2:33.67).
