Box Score 2 FREDONIA, N.Y. – For the second year in a row, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team clinched the State University of New York Athletic Conference's (SUNYAC) regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament, winning twice on the second and final day of the third SUNYAC Pool Play hosted at SUNY Fredonia's Dods Hall on Saturday.
The Hawks downed SUNY Geneseo, 3-1 (25-13, 20-25, 25-10, 25-18), before topping SUNY Oswego, 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-16).
For the second consecutive year, the Hawk Center will serve as host to the SUNYAC Tournament, which will run from Friday-Sunday, Nov. 7-9. The Hawks receive a bye through the quarterfinal round and will play the winner of the quarterfinal matchup between the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds in the semifinals. The winner of the SUNYAC Tournament is crowned as SUNYAC champion and earns the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
New Paltz rises to 25-5 and 9-0 in the SUNYAC with the wins and next hosts Vassar College on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. Geneseo drops to 17-7 (4-5 SUNYAC) and plays at Nazareth College next on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m., while Oswego falls to 18-13 (5-4 SUNYAC) and hosts SUNYIT next on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 12 p.m.
New Paltz 3, Geneseo 1The Hawks' attack fired on all cylinders against Geneseo, hitting .270 for the match. New Paltz limited the Knights to .131 hitting, and the Hawks held the upper hand in service aces (9-4) and total team blocks (8-2).
Junior outside hitter
Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) keyed the Hawk attack with 14 kills and a .308 hitting percentage, and she also was strong defensively with 10 digs. Sophomore outside hitter
Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) floored 11 kills and fashioned a .455 hitting percentage, while freshman setter
Maddie Zwickl (Chester, N.Y./Warwick Valley) doled out 43 assists. Defensively, senior libero
Katy Herbst (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) defended 26 digs, while Borquist totaled three solo blocks.
For Geneseo, sophomore outside hitter Tricia Baxley and junior outside hitter Lizzy Morton each tallied seven kills, while junior setter Bethany VanDerMeid handed out 27 assists. Freshman libero Kathleen Irwin and sophomore right side Emma Lannon paced the back row defensively with 15 and 11 digs, respectively.
New Paltz 3, Oswego 0The Hawks prevented the Lakers from generating much offense in the nightcap, holding Oswego to a .030 hitting percentage. New Paltz, meanwhile, hit above .200 once again with a .245 hitting percentage, and the Hawks dominated at the service line with 11 aces.
In a match that saw 12 different New Paltz student-athletes take to the floor, Borquist and Roessler led the offense with nine and eight kills, respectively. Zwickl dished out 33 assists, while senior middle hitter
Alli Coleman (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton Central) landed four service aces. Herbst came up with a match-high 16 digs, while Zwickl and Borquist also reached double figures in the statistical category with 13 each.
Junior outside hitter Kelsey Dillon ignited the Laker attack with five kills, while sophomore setter Lauren Edwards handed out 11 assists. Defensively, junior libero Rachael Ruggaber provided 10 digs, while Dillon and senior middle blocker Stephanie Bailey each tallied three total blocks.
