Box Score POTSDAM, N.Y. – After dropping its first conference game of the season last night, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team responded nicely with a dominating 71-51 victory at SUNY Potsdam on Saturday afternoon in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.
The Hawks move to 4-4 with a 1-1 mark in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play and will not take the court until Jan. 6, playing at SUNY Cortland at 7:30 p.m. The Bears fall to 1-5, 0-2 SUNYAC and will host St. Lawrence on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
Leading the way offensively was freshman guard/forward
Jasmine Bryant (Elmont, N.Y./St. Mary's College Prep) who scored a game-high 16 points in 19 minutes off the bench. Bryant shot 6-of-9 from the field and finished with four steals and three rebounds.
Junior forward
Courtney Irby (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) chipped in nine points, six rebounds and two assists. Junior guard/forward
Colleen Ames (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) also scored nine points while sophomore guard/forward
Kit Small (Slingerlands, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Names) dished out a game-high five assists.
The Hawks outrebounded Potsdam 47-34 and forced 25 miscues, scoring 13 points off those turnovers, and scored the majority of their points in the paint, notching 32 points in the high-percentage area. For the game, the bench for New Paltz was a major factor, outscoring Potsdam 40-17 with Bryant, Ames and freshman guard
Sydney Pinn (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) accruing 29 points.
For the Bears, Carli Reynolds scored a team-best 12 points with Colleen McNamara chipping in nine points off the bench. The Hawks limited Potsdam to a 34.0 percent outing from the field (16-of-47) and surrendered just four three-pointers.
New Paltz led from start to finish, beginning the contest on a 15-3 run. The Hawks increased their lead to 16 (25-9) with a little over seven minutes remaining in the opening half and seized a comfortable 15-point lead at intermission, 37-22.
In the second period, the Bears inched within 11 points (42-31) with 10:25 to go but New Paltz would not let Potsdam get any closer, taking a 22-point advantage -their largest of the day- with 2:58 to play after a pair of Pinn free throws.
