Softball Faces Tough Test in Capital, No. 3 Salisbury this Weekend

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team will travel to Salisbury, Md., this weekend to take on Capital University and No. 3 Salisbury University in a pair of two-game sets at the Salisbury Tournament. On Friday, March 14, the Hawks square off against Capital University at 11 a.m. before taking on host Salisbury at 1 p.m. The following day, New Paltz matches up with Capital at 10 a.m. before closing out the trip with a 2 p.m. contest against Salisbury.
 
RECORDS: The Hawks have started out their season 1-3, while Capital University is 6-2 and Salisbury is 10-0.
 
SCOUTING THE HAWKS (1-3): The Hawks split their final games at the Beach Blast in the Mountains Classic hosted by Roanoke College on Sunday, March 2, finishing the weekend at 1-3... The Hawks defeated Centenary (N.J.) College, 5-2 and then fell to Kean University 10-6... Against Centenary, head coach Brittany Robinson notched her first win at the helm of the Hawks' softball program, and sophomore pitcher Katie Rutcofsky got the win in the circle, pitching the game in its entirety and allowing only two runs off nine hits... Against Kean, the Hawks tried to make a comeback in the later innings, scoring three of their six runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
 
INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS: Kull and Burgess lead the offense, hitting .615 and .538, respectively... Grande follows right behind them hitting an even .500 and leads the team with three RBI.
 
TEAM STATISTICS: The Hawks are batting .331 with a .352 on-base percentage and have knocked in 14 RBI on the season.
 
SCOUTING THE CRUSADERS (6-2): Capital set a program record for runs scored in its game on Friday, Feb. 28, against Johnson State (Vt.) College, winning, 32-1... The school's previous record was 23 and was recorded twice in 1985... The Crusaders had 28 hits on the day and had two 10-run innings... Sophomore shortstop Therese Becker had five hits, two runs scored and RBI... Junior outfielder Kelsey Swain added four hits, four runs scored and four RBI, and junior outfielder LeAnna Cotton also tallied four hits, including a double and a home run, which helped earn her four runs scored and four RBI... Junior pitcher Alyssa Patznick received the win, allowing just one walk and striking out seven in just three innings of duty.
 
INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS: Sophomore Therese Becker is an offensive threat for the Crusaders, batting .481 with one home run and nine RBI... Freshman Marisa Koss also adds two home runs and six RBI, batting .471 with an on-base percentage of .526.
 
TEAM STATISTICS: The Crusaders bat .377 on the year with an on-base percentage of .420... They have a total of six home runs and 63 RBI, tallying 71 runs on the season... Capital's pitchers have a combined earned-run average of 2.06 and hold their opponents to a .207 batting average.
 
 
SCOUTING THE SEA GULLS (10-0): No. 3 Salisbury has opened up its season with a perfect 10-0 record... In their most recent outing, the Sea Gulls swept Lynchburg College in a doubleheader, winning, 2-0, in the first game and 11-3 in the second game... Junior pitcher Rachel Johnson got the win for the Sea Gulls, posting a season-high 16 strikeouts... Both of Salisbury's runs were scored in the fifth inning when sophomore designated player Paige Knussman hit a line drive to right-center, scoring two... In the second game, Knussman finished the contest batting 4-for-4, hitting her second home run of the year and knocking in five RBI... Sophomore shortstop Kim Dorsey also hit 2-for-2, scoring three runs for the Sea Gulls... Senior pitcher Kathryn Larson got the win, pitching three innings and striking out two batters.
 
INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS: Dorey and Knussman top the team's list of highest batting averages at .655 and .643, respectively... They also top the home run and RBI charts for the team, as Dorey has four home runs and six RBI and Knussman has two home runs and 16 RBI.
 
TEAM STATISTICS: The Sea Gulls have an impressive five shutouts in their first 10 games... They are batting .391 with an on-base percentage of .453... Salisbury has hit eight home runs and has 72 RBI... The Seagulls' pitchers have a combined earned-run average of 0.47 and have limited their opponents to a .155 batting average.
 

LAST MEETINGS: This is the first time that the Hawks' softball team will compete against both Capital and Salisbury.

WHAT'S NEXT: The Hawks next travel to Wilkes-Barre, Pa, to take on Wilkes University on Sunday, March 23, for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m... Capital's next doubleheader is at Transylvania (Ky.) University and is at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 20... Salisbury hits the road to play Christopher Newport on Sunday, March 23, for a 1 p.m. Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) doubleheader.
 
COACHES: New Paltz is led by first-year head coach Brittany Robinson... Capital is directed by Nan Payne, in her 16th year, and Salisbury is coached by Margie Knight, in her 18th year.
