Baseball Hosts Oneonta in SUNYAC Game Tuesday

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Poor field conditions at SUNY Oneonta have moved the State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team's State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader against the Red Dragons to Loren Campbell Memorial Field, as the two teams will meet on Tuesday, April 1, at New Paltz for a 3 p.m. nine-inning game.

RECORDS: New Paltz comes into Tuesday's game with a 9-12 overall record and a 1-4 SUNYAC mark… Oneonta is 4-10 overall and has yet to complete a SUNYAC contest this season.

SCOUTING THE HAWKS (9-12, 1-4 SUNYAC): New Paltz split its home-opening games against The College at Brockport on Saturday, March 29, losing, 8-1, to the Golden Eagles in game one before bouncing back with a 5-0 victory in the seven-inning nightcap… Senior Andrew Grann threw a three-hit shutout to earn the game two win, notching a career-high-tying nine strikeouts… As a result of his efforts, Grann was named the SUNYAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week… Sophomore Andrew DiNardo, who batted .571 (4-for-7) across the two games, was named the SUNYAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week.

INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS: Despite seeing just 19 at-bats, senior Kenny Gentile is the team's leading hitter with a .421 batting average… DiNardo has been a staple in the lineup all year, leading the team in hits (22) and runs scored (11)… Junior Shaun Hansen leads the SUNYAC in doubles with eight, while junior Richard Guido is tops in the conference in stolen bases with 11… On the mound, junior Roy Missall has the team's lowest ERA (0.00) in 10 2/3 innings of relief work… Sophomore Christian Huertas has the highest ERA among starters at 1.47, while Grann's shutout brought him down to a 3.86 ERA on the season… Grann leads the team in strikeouts with 25.

TEAM STATISTICS: New Paltz leads the SUNYAC in stolen bases with 48, and its pitching staff has the third-best ERA in the conference at 3.91… The Hawks are hitting .274 as a team this year.

SCOUTING THE RED DRAGONS (4-10, 0-0 SUNYAC): Oneonta had its game against SUNY Fredonia suspended due to rain on Saturday, March 29, at North Collins High School… The Red Dragons were up, 3-0, in the seventh inning when the contest was halted due to inclement weather… Oneonta's last series came from Saturday-Sunday, March 22-23, in New Jersey, beating then-No. 4 Kean University, 8-0, while falling twice to Montclair State University.

INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS: Junior Steve Ascher is the team's ace on the mound with a 1.19 ERA and a .133 opposing batting average… He is second in the SUNYAC in ERA and first in the conference in opposing batting average… Offensively, junior Matt Mastroianni leads the way with a .409 batting average and 11 RBI.

TEAM STATISTICS: Oneonta is hitting .280 as a team this year and has been sure-handed defensively with a .961 fielding percentage that ranks third in the SUNYAC.

LAST MEETINGS: Oneonta took the series, 2-1, last year… The Red Dragons won the first two meetings on Tuesday, April 2, and Tuesday, April 16, winning by scores of 3-1 and 1-0, respectively… New Paltz prevented the series sweep with a 1-0 triumph on Wednesday, April 24, in Amsterdam, N.Y.

WHAT'S NEXT: New Paltz faces SUNY Oswego in a three-game series from Saturday-Sunday, April 5-6, in Webster, N.Y… The two teams will meet for a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday before finishing off the series with a 12 p.m. single game on Sunday… Oneonta next visits Ithaca College on Wednesday, April 2, for a 2 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
