Softball to Play Eight Games in Four Days Beginning on Friday vs. Oneonta

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team gets set to play eight games in four days from Friday-Monday, April 11-14, which begins with a 3 p.m. home doubleheader against SUNY Oneonta on Friday at 3 p.m. On Saturday, the Hawks take on the College of Staten Island for a 12 p.m. twinbill before heading to the Rochester area for a pair of doubleheaders. New Paltz meets up with SUNY Geneseo on Sunday at 12 p.m. and finishes off the four-day stretch on Monday against The College at Brockport at 12 p.m.

RECORDS: The Hawks hold a 5-11 overall mark with a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) record of 2-2… Oneonta is 15-5, 5-1 SUNYAC, while Staten Island is 9-4… Geneseo is 5-7, 2-2 SUNYAC, while Brockport is 9-3, 0-0 SUNYAC.

SCOUTING THE HAWKS (5-11, 2-2 SUNYAC): The Hawks dropped two games to non-conference opponent Western Connecticut State University on Wednesday, April 9, in Danbury, Conn… Western Connecticut State won game one, 4-2, before taking the nightcap by a 7-1 final… Junior Shayna Burgess went 4-for-5 at the plate across both games, hitting a home run in game one.

INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS: Burgess enters the weekend with a .469 batting average, which leads the team and is third-best in the SUNYAC… She also leads the team in hits (23), doubles (7), triples (3), home runs (1) and slugging percentage (.796)… Among SUNYAC leaders, she ranks first in slugging percentage, second in doubles, second in triples and fifth in hits... Junior Noelle Grande has a batting average of .375 with six walks to make her on-base percentage .457… After getting on base, Grande has stolen seven bases, which ranks fourth in the conference…. Senior Chelsea Kull is batting .392 and is tops on the team in RBI (11)… Sophomore Katie Rutcofsky is 3-4 in the circle for the Hawks with an ERA of 3.97 over 37 innings pitched.

TEAM STATISTICS: The Hawks are currently hitting .311 as a team, which is good for third in the SUNYAC… They have hit for power, too, boasting a slugging percentage of .410, and they are fourth in the conference in fielding percentage (.946).

SCOUTING THE RED DRAGONS (15-5, 5-1 SUNYAC): Oneonta split a doubleheader with non-conference opponent Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Tuesday, April 8, at the Red Dragon Softball Field in Oneonta, N.Y… Oneonta lost the first game, 8-2, before winning in the nightcap, 4-3… Freshman Jenn Brocco recorded two hits for the Red Dragons in game one, while freshman Sabrina DeAngelis was tagged with the loss… In game two, junior Rachel Hitt earned her sixth win of the season, lasting five innings while giving up six hits and two earned runs… Sophomore Traci Lichtenstein and junior Brianna Rivera both recorded two hits for the Red Dragons in game two.

INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS: Sophomore Jamie Whittam is batting .364 with 19 runs, 11 RBI and three doubles… Whittam currently is third in the SUNYAC in runs scored… Rivera has also been solid at the plate for the Red Dragons, as she is hitting .355 with seven doubles, four triples and 15 RBI… She is at the top of the conference in triples, is tied for second in the SUNYAC in doubles and is seventh in the SUNYAC in hits with 22… DeAngelis has a 7-3 record in the circle for the Red Dragons… She has a 2.21 ERA and 60 strikeouts over 63 1/3 innings pitched on the season… DeAngelis ranks first in the SUNYAC in innings pitched and wins, and she is second in the conference in strikeouts.

TEAM STATISTICS: The Red Dragons are batting .296 as a team, and they have one of the best defenses in the conference with a fielding percentage of .962… Oneonta has hit 36 doubles as a team, which is ranked first in the SUNYAC, and it also leads the SUNYAC in RBI with 107… The Red Dragons' pitching staff has combined for an ERA of 2.37 that ranks third in the conference.

SCOUTING THE DOLPHINS (9-4): The Dolphin bats were alive on April 5, as they scored a total of 30 runs in a doubleheader sweep of City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) opponent Lehman College… The Dolphins won, 19-3, in game one before shutting out Lehman, 11-0, in game two… Four different Staten Island batters recorded multiple hits, and five different batters recorded multiple RBI in game one while junior Victoria Procopio earned her second win on the season by pitching three innings… In game two, freshman Jacqueline Cautela led the Dolphin bats by going 3-for-3 at the plate and scoring three runs… She also earned her sixth victory of the season by throwing five scoreless innings in the circle.

INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS: Cautela is hitting a solid .500 for the Dolphins through 13 games, which leads the team… She has 22 hits with four doubles and one triple… Senior Stefanie Solari has been a staple in the Dolphin lineup, as she is batting .366 with 17 RBI… Cautela is 6-2 in the circle so far this season with an ERA of 3.16 over 51 1/3 innings pitched.

TEAM STATISTICS: Staten Island is batting .337 as a team and owns a slugging percentage of .427… The Dolphins have outscored their opponents 90-49, and they have a team ERA of 4.48 with 48 strikeouts.

SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS (5-7, 2-2 SUNYAC): On Sunday, April 6, Geneseo swept SUNYAC opponent Buffalo State in a doubleheader by the scores of 13-0 and 8-0… Seniors Sam Trapasso and Elise Porreca each had two hits and three RBI for the Knights in game one of the doubleheader… Junior Kayleigh Blersch also had three RBI… Junior Corrin Spallone earned the win for the Knights by pitching five scoreless innings while scattering just three hits... Blersch led the offensive attack in game two, going 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI… Freshman Abby Dennett hit a solo home run in game two to help guide the offense… Spallone earned the win again in the nightcap by giving up no runs and only one hit over six innings pitched.

INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS: Trapasso is leading the Knights and is ranked seventh in the SUNYAC in batting average (.429)… She also has eight doubles, which leads the SUNYAC, and is ranked 10th in the conference in RBI with 13… Spallone has an ERA of 1.73, which is ranked third in the conference… Opposing batters are only hitting .162 off of her, which is second-best in the SUNYAC… She holds a 3-2 mark over 28 1/3 innings pitched… Sophomore Mikayla Moore has a 2-3 record over 30 1/3 innings pitched… Moore has struck out 34 batters, which ranks sixth in the SUNYAC.

TEAM STATISTICS: The Knights are batting .219 as a team, but their true calling card is in the circle… Geneseo has a team ERA of 2.16, which ranks second in the SUNYAC, and the Knights have played well defensively, too, with a fielding percentage of .929.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES (9-3, 0-0 SUNYAC): On Friday, April 11, the Golden Eagles will play their first games since March 20 when they won against Clarkson University and St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) College in Lee County, Fla., by the scores of 8-1 and 8-0 respectively… In the matchup against Clarkson, the Golden Eagle bats were led by junior Andrea Schell, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and junior Gabrielle Rivers, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI… Sophomore Emily Kolenda earned the win and moved to 4-0 on the season by only allowing one run and two hits over seven innings pitched… Versus St. Joseph's, Kolenda and sophomore Jordan Bush led the offensive attack… Kolenda blasted a two-run home run, and Bush tallied two hits… Sophomore Jaime Berger pitched five innings, giving up two hits and no runs to earn her second win of the year.

INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS: Senior Sarah Rosenbarker leads the team in hits with 15 and has a batting average of .438, which is good for fourth in the SUNYAC… Rivers has an on-base percentage of .583, which is tops in the conference… Sophomore Korey Kibling and Kolenda have the two best ERAs in the conference at 0.64 and 0.78, respectively… Opposing batters are hitting just .153 off Kolenda, which is the best mark in the SUNYAC.
 
TEAM STATISTICS: The Golden Eagles are batting .343 as a team, which is the best in the SUNYAC… They also hold the top team ERA in the conference at 1.26… Brockport also plays solid defense, as it has a fielding percentage of .955 that ranks third in the conference.

LAST MEETING: After sweeping New Paltz in the regular season, Brockport posted a 6-4 victory over the Hawks during the SUNYAC Tournament on May 2, 2013… The recap for that game is below.
