Softball Salvages Split in SUNYAC Doubleheader against Geneseo

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GENESEO, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team split yet another State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader on Sunday at Vic Raschi Field, this time doing so against SUNY Geneseo. The Knights won game one, 7-5, before the Hawks took the nightcap, 1-0.

New Paltz, which is now 7-12 and 4-3 in the SUNYAC, has split in every full SUNYAC doubleheader it has played this year. The Hawks next play The College at Brockport tomorrow in a 12 p.m. doubleheader. Geneseo moves to 9-9 overall and 6-4 in the SUNYAC. The Knights next visit Alfred State on Tuesday, April 15, for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.

Game 1: Geneseo 7, New Paltz 5

The Hawks were done in by four errors in the third inning of game one, and the Knights capitalized, scoring seven runs in the frame.

Freshman shortstop Kiersten Carlomagno (Commack, N.Y./Commack) gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, driving in a pair of runs off an RBI single to left field. That lead was short-lived, though, with the Knights striking for seven runs off three hits and four errors in the home half of the inning to open up a 7-2 advantage.

New Paltz mounted a rally in the fifth, scoring three runs. Junior second baseman Meg Brewer (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) drove in a run on a fielder's choice play before junior right fielder Noelle Grande (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) knocked in a pair of runs two batters later with an RBI double to left center. The Hawks were unable to pull any closer, though, and ended up falling by a 7-5 final.

Sophomore pitcher Katie Rutcofsky (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy) had a solid outing in the loss, yielding seven unearned runs off five hits and two walks while striking out four. Geneseo's junior pitcher Corrin Spallone picked up the win, allowing five runs (three earned) off four hits and a walk while striking out five.

Grande's 2-for-3 day with two RBI and a double paced the Hawk attack, while five different Geneseo batters notched a hit.

Game 2: New Paltz 1, Geneseo 0

Geneseo got a runner on base on 10 different occasions, but New Paltz kept the Knights off the scoreboard in the nightcap, relying on one run of its own in the fifth to secure the split.

With one out in the top of the fifth, senior pitcher Amber Carozza (Milton, N.Y./Marlboro) drew a walk, and during the Hawks' next at-bat, junior catcher Shayna Burgess (Smithtown, N.Y./Commack) doubled down the left-field line to plate Carozza. That ended up being all the offense produced in game two, and New Paltz posted its second shutout in three days.

Carozza twirled a six-hit shutout, adding three strikeouts. Geneseo's sophomore Mikayla Moore suffered the loss despite yielding only one run off five hits and a hit by pitch while striking out six.

New Paltz's attack was keyed by Burgess and junior designated player Erika Traina (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore). Burgess went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a stolen base, while Traina batted 2-for-3. Senior third baseman Elise Porreca and junior center fielder Kayleigh Blersch recorded multiple hits for Geneseo.
