PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Senior pitcher Andrew Grann (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) pitched a complete-game gem, to become the school's all-time leader in wins, and the State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team scored the winning run in the eighth inning to defeat SUNY Plattsburgh, 1-0, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Friday afternoon.
 
Grann was absolutely masterful, tossing a three-hitter to notch his 17th career victory for the Hawks. Junior Richard Guido (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) ignited the victory by slapping a triple to left field in the eighth inning and was brought home by a sacrifice fly to left center by senior David Lostaglio (Milton, N.Y./Marlboro Central).
 
With the victory, New Paltz takes the first game of a three-game series with the Cardinals and improves to 13-17, 5-9 SUNYAC. Plattsburgh drops to 9-18, 4-9. The two teams will next play a Saturday doubleheader starting a 12 p.m.
 
Friday afternoon's game was for baseball purists -- an old-fashioned pitchers' duel. The teams combined for just seven hits and the single run. Plattsburgh State's senior Joe Leddy matched Grann pitch-for-pitch. He went nine innings, allowing one run on four hits. He struck out three batters and issued one walk.
 
But the afternoon belonged to Grann, with timely hitting from Guido. The right-hander scattered just three hits and struck out seven Plattsburgh hitters in a 114-pitch masterpiece. He allowed just one walk and earned his fourth victory of the season with three ground ball outs to close out the ninth inning.
 
Plattsburgh threatened just once in the game, stranding two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh. Two consecutive Plattsburgh batters were hit by a pitch to start the inning. Then a single by senior John Casten advanced freshman Jeremy Rodriguez to third base with two outs. Grann adeptly induced one of his 12 ground ball outs to thwart the Plattsburgh momentum and preserve his complete-game shutout.
