In High Scoring Game, Farmingdale Prevails Over Women's Lacrosse, 22-19

Box Score

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – In a game chock full of offense and momentum swings, Farmingdale State College tallied five of the game's final six goals to outlast the State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team, 22-19, on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action.

With 66 shots and 41 goals, offense was hardly at a premium, and dramatic shifts in momentum were aplenty, too. The game was tied 12 times, the last coming at 18-18 with 7:22 remaining.

The Hawks had earned an 18-17 lead on a goal by senior attack Talia Tesler (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton), her fifth of the game, but the Rams surged ahead with three straight goals to build a 20-18 lead, and although Tesler's sixth goal of the contest brought New Paltz within 20-19 with 3:04 to play, Farmingdale's sophomore attack Kimberly Pepe tallied two straight goals –33 seconds apart – with 2:27 and 1:54 to play, to clinch her team's victory.

The loss evens New Paltz at 4-4. The Rams, who have won seven straight, improve to 13-1. The Hawks resume State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play, next travelling to The College at Brockport, ranked No. 18 nationally, for an 11 a.m. game on Saturday, April 12. Farmingdale hosts The College at Old Westbury in a Skyline Conference game on Thursday at 3 p.m.

Tesler was an offensive juggernaut for New Paltz, tallying six goals. Both junior midfielder Lianne Valdivia (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) and junior attack Kelsey Healy (Central Islip, N.Y./Bay Shore) each had four goals. Junior midfielder Nicole Marzocca had seven goals and two assists for the Rams. Junior midfielder Alyssa Handel chipped in five tallies.

The Hawks, who trailed Farmingdale 8-6 with 11:38 until intermission, closed out the first half with a flurry, scoring five of the final six goals to lead 11-9. Healy had three of her goals during this stretch.

The second half was back-and-forth, with six ties. The Hawks had leads of 16-14 and 17-15 following goals by Valdivia on each occasion (at the 17:31 and 12:38 marks, respectively), but in a game where no lead was secure, Farmingdale tied the contest at 17-17 and 18-18. Marzocca scored the game-winner with 3:58 to play, affording the Rams a 20-19 lead.

Ground balls were nearly even with New Paltz holding a 22-21 edge. Junior defender Fatima Ismail (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) and Valdivia each had four for the Hawks. In goal, junior Jackie Ulanoff (Northport, N.Y./Northport) had 11 saves.

Farmindgale split its goalie duties, with freshman Krista Spagnoletta making four saves in the second half to earn the win.
