Softball Falls Twice to Western Connecticut in Non-Conference Action

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DANBURY, Conn. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team suffered a non-conference doubleheader sweep at the hands of Western Connecticut State University on Wednesday at Westside Field, losing game one, 4-2, before falling by a 7-1 final in the nightcap.

New Paltz drops to 5-11 overall with the losses and hosts SUNY Oneonta in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) twinbill on Friday, April 11, at 3 p.m. Western Connecticut State rises to 20-5-1 and hosts Newbury College in a single game tomorrow at 5 p.m.

Game 1: Western Connecticut State 4, New Paltz 2

The Colonials put up four runs in the first inning and held on the rest of the way to pick up the 4-2 victory.

Two runs came across on a defensive miscue to open scoring for Western Connecticut State in the first. Senior third baseman Kylee Ruther then plated a run with a single through the right side before a double steal allowed the Colonials to notch a 4-0 advantage.

Junior pinch runner Juliette Verso (Commack, N.Y./Commack) put the Hawks on the board in the third inning, scoring while Western Connecticut State caught another Hawk runner in a run down. Junior center fielder Shayna Burgess (Smithtown, N.Y./Commack) blasted a home run down the left-field line in the sixth to pull the Hawks within two, but the Colonials retired New Paltz in order in the seventh to come away with the win.

Sophomore pitcher Katie Rutcofsky (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy) was charged with the loss, allowing four unearned runs off six hits and a walk while striking out one. Sophomore pitcher Alle Sabith gained the win for Western Connecticut State, yielding two runs off six hits and a walk while striking out three.

Burgess keyed New Paltz's offense in game one, going 3-for-3 with a home run, an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore catcher Erin Weber batted 2-for-3 to pace Western Connecticut State.

Game 2: Western Connecticut State 7, New Paltz 1

Western Connecticut State broke open a one-run game in the bottom of the fifth by scoring four runs, and the Colonials scored once more in the sixth for good measure in the 7-1 triumph.

Junior first baseman Julia Bocek ripped a two-run home run to left field to open scoring for the Colonials in the first, while senior first baseman Chelsea Kull (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) drove in senior pitcher Amber Carozza (Milton, N.Y./Marlboro) in the third off a fielder's choice to draw the Hawks within one.

Western Connecticut State scratched off four runs in the fifth, and an RBI double by sophomore shortstop Kristen Sliman in the sixth spelled out the final score of 7-1.

Junior pitcher Erika Traina (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) was charged with the loss, giving up six runs off 11 hits while striking out one. Sophomore pitcher Emily Cintorino earned the win by allowing one run off three hits and two walks while striking out two.

Three different Hawks recorded a hit in the nightcap, while Western Connecticut State had five different batters strike for multiple hits en route to scattering 13 as a team.
