Softball Falls to Oneonta at SUNYACs, Will Continue Buffalo St. Game Friday

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team lost its first game at the double-elimination State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament Thursday at SUNY Oneonta's Red Dragon Field before its second contest of the day was halted due to thunderstorms. Sixth-seeded New Paltz fell, 12-2, in five innings to top-seeded Oneonta in game one before trailing fifth-seeded Buffalo State, 2-0, in the top of the third before thunderstorms halted the contest.
 
New Paltz, which dropped to 10-23 overall with the loss to Oneonta, will continue its game against Buffalo State tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. Oneonta moves to 26-9 overall and faces fourth-seeded SUNY Geneseo at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow.
 
The Hawks opened scoring against Oneonta, as junior catcher Shayna Burgess (Smithtown, N.Y./Commack) came around to score in the top of the first on an RBI single up the middle by senior first baseman Chelsea Kull (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor). Oneonta evened the score in the home half of the first and went on to push across two runs in the second, three runs in the third and six runs in the fourth to capture a 12-1 edge. Freshman shortstop Kiersten Carlomagno (Commack, N.Y./Commack) scored in the top of the fifth to spell out the final score of 12-2.
 
Sophomore pitcher Katie Rutcofsky (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy) shouldered the loss, yielding six runs (four earned) off eight hits while striking out four in 3 1/3 innings of duty. Oneonta's freshman pitcher Sabrina DeAngelis picked up the victory, giving up one unearned run off three hits and a walk while striking out three.
 
Burgess keyed the Hawk attack with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, scoring once and notching a double. Freshman center fielder Katie O'Gorman ignited the Red Dragon bats, going 3-for-3 with five RBI, two runs scored, two doubles and a home run.
