Women’s Volleyball Falls to No. 1 Calvin, Tops Roger Williams to Open Season

POTSDAM, N.Y. – After falling, 3-1 (25-11, 23-25, 25-19, 25-11), to top-ranked Calvin College in its first match of the season at the Clarkson Classic Friday at Clarkson University's Alumni Gymnasium, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team grinded out a 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 16-25, 26-24, 17-15) win over Roger Williams University to salvage a day-one split.

New Paltz moves to 1-1 on the season and closes out play at the tournament tomorrow, facing No. 20 Clarkson at 1 p.m. followed by a 3 p.m. match against Simmons College. Calvin moves to 2-0 for the season and rounds out action at the event tomorrow, taking on Simmons College at 9 a.m. followed by an 11 a.m. encounter with Roger Williams University. Roger Williams drops to 0-1 and faces a pair of nationally-ranked teams tomorrow in Calvin (1 p.m.) and Clarkson (3 p.m.).


No. 1 Calvin 3, New Paltz 1

Against Calvin, the reigning NCAA Division III national champions, New Paltz bounced back from a 25-11 setback in the first set with a 25-23 victory in the second. The Knights pulled ahead once again with a 25-19 triumph in the third and sealed the victory with a 25-11 win in the fourth.

Calvin hit .382 (51-9-110) for the match and had nine total team blocks, while the Hawks hit .104 (35-23-115). New Paltz was able to perform well from the service line, landing nine aces.

Junior outside hitter Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) powered the New Paltz attack with 12 kills and a .258 hitting percentage, while freshman setter Maddie Zwickl (Chester, N.Y./Warwick Valley) doled out 28 assists in her collegiate debut. Senior libero Katy Herbst (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) collected 16 digs to pace the back row defensively.

New Paltz 3, Roger Williams 2

New Paltz recovered from a lopsided set-three loss against Roger Williams and showed mettle late in the fourth and fifth frames, emerging with a key five-set win to create momentum heading into tomorrow's early-season regional matchup against Clarkson.

Roger Williams held a .225-to-.191 edge in hitting percentage, but New Paltz was strong up front defensively with nine total team blocks.

Borquist posted a double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Katy Braddon (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) registered 10 kills and three total blocks. Herbst had 14 digs and four service aces, while Zwickl notched a double-double with 39 assists and 15 digs.
