Women’s Volleyball Splits on Day 1 of Days Inn Blue Jay Classic

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team split on day one of the Days Inn Blue Jay Classic hosted by Elizabethtown College on Friday at the Thompson Gymnasium, downing York (Pa.) College, 3-1 (20-25, 25-16, 29-27, 25-21), before falling by a 3-0 (25-21, 25-8, 25-21) final to Johns Hopkins University.

New Paltz saw its winning streak end at 11 and moves to 12-3 overall on the season. York falls to 4-8 overall, while Johns Hopkins rises to 7-8. New Paltz finishes up action at the tournament tomorrow, facing host Elizabethtown at 11 a.m. before closing out with a 1 p.m. tilt against Swarthmore College.

Against York, sophomore middle hitter Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) and junior outside hitter Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) paced the Hawk attack with 10 kills each. Freshman setter Maddie Zwickl (Chester, N.Y./Warwick Valley) doled out 40 assists, while senior libero Katy Herbst (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) defended 27 digs. Roessler was dominant at the net defensively with six total blocks.

Johns Hopkins 3, New Paltz 0

New Paltz received a six-kill performance from Borquist against Johns Hopkins, while Zwickl handed out nine assists. Herbst boasted 17 digs to pace the back row defensively.
