Women’s Soccer Plays Cortland to 1-1 Double OT Draw in SUNYAC Opener

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team played to a 1-1 double overtime draw at SUNY Cortland on Friday afternoon in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener for both teams.
 
The Hawks (6-3-1, 0-0-1 SUNYAC) will look to get in the win column tomorrow at SUNY Oswego at 1 p.m. Oswego and SUNY Oneonta played to a 0-0 double overtime draw on Friday. The Red Dragons (1-5-1, 0-0-1 SUNYAC) host Oneonta tomorrow at 1 p.m.
 
The match was scoreless well into the second half of play when sophomore Skye Kaler (Charlton, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) connected for her third goal of the season in the 66th minute, thanks to an assist by senior midfielder Sarah Painter (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) to put the Hawks up 1-0.
 
But the Red Dragons responded with the equalizer in the 83rd minute as Rebecca Carucci netted her first goal of the year on a set-piece from nearly midfield that ricocheted off the left post for the score.
 
Both squads played 20 minutes of scoreless soccer before heading to a tie-breaking shootout, in which Cortland won 11-10.
 
For the match, New Paltz outshot Cortland 26-24 and both teams recorded nine shots on goal. Kaler led the team with five shots while senior captain Eleni Anselmi (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland), senior defender Bryce Kristall (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) and junior forward Chelsea Weir (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) all registered four shots apiece.
 
Freshman goalkeeper Katelyn Cordero (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) played all 110 minutes and recorded seven saves.
