Box Score

GENEVA, N.Y. – The No. 19 State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team finished with a 15-13 margin in shots but ended up falling, 4-1, to No. 7 William Smith College at McCooey Field on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference contest.

In addition to holding the upper hand in shots taken, New Paltz also outgained William Smith, 6-2, in penalty corners.

William Smith's sophomore forward Hannah Wood finished with four goals to lead the Herons, which served as a single-game career-high.

New Paltz drops to 10-3 overall with the loss and next hosts SUNY Oneonta in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) and Catskill Cup contest on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 4 p.m. William Smith rises to 11-1 and next visits Union (N.Y.) College on Friday, Oct. 16, at 4 p.m.

Wood ignited the Heron attack in the 16th minute and scored again 34 seconds later off a crossing pass from junior midfielder/back Jessica Borbee. The Hawks cut the lead in half in the 34th minute, as sophomore forward Sam Eberle (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) redirected a pass from junior forward Kayla McKeveny (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) into the goal.

Wood scored twice early in the second half, rattling the back of the cage in the 38th minute and the 41st minute to spell what eventually ended up being the final score. On Wood's final goal, junior forward Alessandra Patrizio was credited with an assist.

New Paltz made a push down the stretch to score, but despite taking seven shots and three penalty corners in the final 10 minutes of play, the Hawks were unable to draw any closer.

Senior Alayna Wageman (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) and sophomore Megan Gangewere (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) combined to make four saves in between the posts for the Hawks, while junior Biz Chirco and sophomore Emily King teamed up to make eight saves in goal for the Herons.
