Field Hockey Prepares for SUNYAC Semifinal against Geneseo

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. –  The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team will look to win its fourth-straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title, as the Hawks enter the SUNYAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed and will host the No. 3 seed, SUNY Geneseo, on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 2 p.m. on the North Turf Field in the semifinal round. This a rematch of last year's SUNYAC championship game, which the Hawks won 4-0 on Nov. 8, 2014.

RECORDS: New Paltz is 13-5 with a 5-1 record in SUNYAC play this season… Geneseo has a record of 10-8 and went 4-2 in SUNYAC action.
 

SCOUTING THE HAWKS (13-5): New Paltz lost to cross-river rival Vassar College by a score of 2-1 on Saturday, Oct. 31, to conclude its regular season… Sophomore forward Justine O'Reilly scored the lone goal for the Hawks in the contest… Sophomore forward Sam Eberle fired off four shots in the match, three of which were on goal… Senior goalkeeper Alayna Wageman notched 11 saves in a losing effort… Wageman is second in the conference with a 1.17 goals-against average (GAA), a .847 save percentage and four shutouts… The Hawks' lone loss in SUNYAC play was a 1-0 loss against No. 1 seed SUNY Cortland on Sept. 26.

STATISTICAL LEADERS: Six Hawks have double-digit point totals on the season… Junior forward Kayla McKeveny is tops with 27, which is also tied for second in the conference… Senior back Jessica Caruana is right behind her with 23… Freshman forward Rachel McLaughlin, junior forward Erin Landy, senior midfielder Dani Ackerman and sophomore midfielder Hayley Kim have point totals of 14, 13, 12 and 10, respectively… McKeveny leads the team and is fourth in the conference with 12 goals… Kim is tops with eight assists, which is tied for first in the conference… Caruana is second in goals (8) and assists (7)… Landy and McLaughlin have six goals each… Ackerman and Eberle have four goals each… Ackerman leads the team with 83 shots… Ackerman is second in the conference in shots (83) and third in shots per game (4.61)… Wageman is 11-5 with a GAA of 1.17, a .847 save percentage, 100 saves and four shutouts.

TEAM STATISTICS: The Hawks are 8-1 at home this year… Their only loss at home came against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute by a score of 2-1 on Oct. 21… New Paltz leads the conference with 391 shots and 199 penalty corners… New Paltz is third in the conference in goals (48), second in assists (27) and second in GAA (1.11)… The Hawks have outshot opponents 391-200 and have outscored them 48-20… New Paltz holds a 273-139 shots-on-goal advantage… New Paltz attempted 243 penalty corners and allowed just 111… The Hawks have outscored their opponent 24-10 in both the first and second halves this season.
 

SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS (10-8): Geneseo lost to the University of Rochester, 3-1, on Saturday, Oct. 31, in its last game of the regular season… The Knights' two conference losses came against New Paltz and top-seeded Cortland… Last season, the Knights earned the No. 4 seed and upset No. 1 seed Cortland in the semifinal round by a score of 2-1… Sophomore midfielder Giovanna Fasanello ranks first in the conference with 87 shots and second with 4.83 shots per game… Sophomore forward/midfielder Cara Stafford is tied for second in the conference in goals (13) and is tied with McKeveny for second in points (27)… Senior goalkeeper Dayna Mercer ranks third in the conference with a 1.80 GAA and third with 123 saves.

STATISTICAL LEADERS: Stafford leads the team with 27 points, 13 goals and four game-winning goals… Freshman Gabriella Clare is second on the team in points (20) and goals (7)… Sophomore Morgan Maley, Fasanello, senior Elena Hingston, senior Sarah Malinak and freshman Tess Necaise have tallied point totals of 18, 15, 15, 14 and 12, respectively… Maley and Malinak lead the team with eight assists each, which is tied with Kim for first in the conference… Hingston is third on the team with seven assists and Clare is fourth with six assists… Fasanello is first on the team with 87 shots, Stafford is second with 53 and Malinak is third with 39… Mercer is 10-8 with a GAA of 1.80, a .799 save percentage, 123 saves and one shutout.

TEAM STATISTICS: The Knights are 3-5 on the road this year… Geneseo leads the conference in goals (54) and assists (42)… Geneseo is second in the conference in shots (334) and third in GAA (1.762)… The Knights have outshot their opponents 334-272 and have outscored them 54-32.
 

LAST MEETING: The Hawks defeated the Knights earlier this season on Oct. 3 by a score of 1-0 in a tightly-contested defensive battle.
 

WHAT'S NEXT: The winner of this game will advance to the final round of the SUNYAC Tournament and face either No. 1 seed Cortland or No. 4 seed Oneonta, who are also playing each other on Wednesday. The location of that championship final will be at the site of the highest-remaining seed.
