Softball Drops 5-1 Decision to Frostburg State

Box Score

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team resumed play at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic on Wednesday morning, falling to Frostburg State University, 5-1.

Offense for both teams came at somewhat of a premium, with the two squads combining for just 13 hits. Frostburg State never trailed in the game, opening scoring with a two-run third inning.

New Paltz drops to 5-2 overall with the loss and faces York (N.Y.) College tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. Frostburg State rises to 6-2.

The Bobcats relied on back-to-back RBI base hits to take the lead in the third, as sophomore second baseman Emily Zengel doubled in sophomore left fielder Emily Harvey before Zengel came across on an RBI single by sophomore pitcher Hannah Tavik.

Junior shortstop Jordan Fiore (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) drove in senior center fielder Alex Verso (Commack, N.Y./Commack) in the top half of the fourth to make it a one-run game, but an RBI single by freshman catcher Sam Gatton in the home half of the fourth pushed Frostburg State's lead back out to two. The Bobcats padded their lead in the fifth with two unearned insurance runs.

Junior designated player Nicole DeCosta (Stormville, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) keyed the Hawk attack, going 2-for-3, while Tavik's 2-for-4 performance at the plate that included an RBI and a run scored paced the Bobcats.

Sophomore pitcher Taylor Corwin (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) was saddled with the loss, yielding two runs off four hits and a walk while striking out one. Senior pitcher Erika Traina (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) threw three innings of relief and permitted three runs (one earned) off four hits and a walk while striking out one.

Frostburg State's Tavik picked up the win in the circle, giving up an unearned run off five hits and three walks while striking out seven.
