Second-Half Run Falls Short in Women's Lacrosse's 18-7 Loss to Redlands

Box Score

REDLANDS, Calif. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team scored four of the first six goals of the second half against the University of Redlands in a non-conference game on Thursday at Farquhar Field, but it was not enough to overcome a 9-2 Bulldog run to end the contest in an 18-7 loss.

New Paltz overcame a slow start and played Redlands tight for stretches of the second half. The Hawks actually committed fewer turnovers in the final 30 minutes of play than the Bulldogs, and New Paltz trailed just 10-8 in draw controls in the second half.

New Paltz drops to 0-3 overall with the loss and finishes out its Southern California trip tomorrow at 4 p.m. (PDT) at Whittier College. Redlands rises to 5-3 and visits Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges next on Saturday, March 21, at 1 p.m.

Redlands scored just 13 seconds into the game, but senior midfielder Lianne Valdivia (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) leveled the tally less than six minutes later with an unassisted goal. Redlands scored the final six goals of the half, the last three of which came from freshman attacker McKenna Tychsen, to enter the break with a 7-1 lead.

Sophomore attacker Melissa Wagner (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) and senior attacker Kelsey Healy (Central Islip, N.Y./Bay Shore) each scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half to cut the deficit to four, but the Bulldogs forged ahead with a six-goal surge to mount a 15-5 advantage. Junior midfielder Alexa Vitale (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall Central) and Wagner scored back-to-back goals to stop the run, but Redlands wound up scoring three more goals before the final whistle.

Redlands finished with a 36-20 edge in shots and a 19-8 cushion in draw controls. The Bulldogs went 11-for-16 on clear attempts, while the Hawks went 8-for-21.

Wagner's three goals led the Hawk offense, while Healy scored twice and Vitale and Valdivia each scored once. Healy tallied a team-high four draw controls, while Valdivia, senior midfielder Carissa Citro (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) and sophomore defender Nicole Gottschalk (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) all picked up four ground balls.

Tychsen ignited the Redlands attack with five goals, while sophomore attacker Dulce Moll, freshman midfielder Lacey Bjorndal and freshman attacker Katy Miele each found the back of the net three times. Moll also doled out four assists, while senior midfielder Emily Dalrymple added three. Junior midfielder Stephanie Garrett also played a key role in the Bulldogs' success with eight draw controls.

Senior goalkeeper Jackie Ulanoff (Northport, N.Y./Northport) stopped nine shots in the loss, while Redlands' two goalkeepers combined for six saves.
