Second Straight Game-Two Walk-Off Gives Softball Twinbill Sweep of Plattsburgh

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SAUGERTIES, N.Y. – For the second time in as many days, the State University of New York at New Paltz softball team completed a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader sweep in walk-off fashion, with Saturday's game-two walk-off against SUNY Plattsburgh coming off the bat of junior second baseman Jordan Fiore (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai), who hit a two-run home run to give the Hawks a 5-4 victory. New Paltz won game one, 8-4.

The dramatic finish of Saturday's neutral-site doubleheader at Cantine Park mimicked Friday's game-two walk-off hit by junior pitcher Katie Rutcofsky (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy), who gave New Paltz a 9-8 win over SUNY Potsdam with an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th.

Junior left fielder/center fielder Fallon Spriggs (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) swatted her sixth home run of the season in game two of the twinbill, giving her sole possession of the single-season program record. Michelle Smith (1988) and Gina Marotta (1995) both shared the previous record of five. To boot, Spriggs, who is in her first season with the Hawks, now ranks sixth on the program's career home runs list. Gina Marotta set the program's all-time record of 12 from 1995-98, and with several series left to play, Spriggs will have that record in her sights.

New Paltz rises to 12-7 overall (5-1 SUNYAC) with the wins and will look to ride the momentum into a non-conference doubleheader against Mount Saint Mary College on Wednesday, April 15, at 3 p.m., which will serve as the Hawks' home opener. Plattsburgh drops to 6-16 overall (1-6 SUNYAC) and visits SUNY Oneonta tomorrow for a 12 p.m. doubleheader.

New Paltz 8, Plattsburgh 4

New Paltz overcame a Plattsburgh home run in the top of the first to mount a 6-1 advantage in game one, a lead the Hawks would not relinquish in an 8-4 victory. The top of the lineup for New Paltz gave Plattsburgh fits, with spots one through four combining to hit 9-for-15 while scoring seven of the team's eight runs.

After a Plattsburgh home run by senior shortstop Brittany Marshall in the top of the first, senior catcher Shayna Burgess (Smithtown, N.Y./Commack) gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead in the home half of the inning with a two-run shot to right center. New Paltz then received a grand slam from senior third baseman Meg Brewer (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) in the bottom of the second to seize a 6-1 cushion.

Freshman first baseman Lauren Graves cut into the Hawk lead with an RBI double in the fourth, but Burgess extended the edge back out to five with her second home run of the day in the home half of the inning. Plattsburgh's freshman center fielder Dominique Zummo blasted a two-run homer in the top of the fifth to make it a 7-4 game, but freshman first baseman Lauren Cappello (New City, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) added an insurance run for the Hawks in the sixth with an RBI groundout.

Burgess keyed the New Paltz attack with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate that included three RBI, three runs scored, two home runs and a stolen base. For Plattsburgh, three different batters finished with two hits.

Rutcofsky earned the win in the circle for the Hawks, yielding four runs (three earned) off seven hits, a walk and a hit by pitch while striking out five. Plattsburgh used two different pitchers in the loss.

New Paltz 5, Plattsburgh 4

In a back-and-forth battle in the nightcap, Plattsburgh overcame a 3-2 deficit heading into the seventh, as freshman second baseman Amanda Tantillo gave the Cardinals a 4-3 advantage with a two-run home run to center field.

With the game on the line, sophomore shortstop Kiersten Carlomagno (Commack, N.Y./Commack) led off the bottom of the inning with a single through the left side, and after the Cardinals recorded an out, Fiore slugged a 2-2 pitch over the fence in left-center field to give the Hawks a 5-4 walk-off win. It marked Fiore's first home run in her three years donning the Blue and Orange.

The Cardinals kicked off the scoring in the first, as Marshall scored on a throwing error. Carlomagno knotted the tally at 1-all in the bottom of the second, driving in Brewer with a double. Following a Graves RBI double in the top of the fourth, Spriggs countered back with a solo homer to left center in the bottom of the inning. Spriggs once again provided a boost to the Hawks' cause two innings later, driving in a run with a double down the left-field line to give New Paltz a 4-3 lead.

Brewer, Spriggs, Carlomagno and Fiore all batted 2-for-3 to lead the Hawk offense, while Brittany Marshall went 2-for-4 for the Cardinals. In addition, Brewer now sits at exactly 100 hits for her career.

Senior pitcher Erika Traina (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) earned the win in relief, throwing three innings while yielding two runs off three hits in addition to striking out two. Senior Kristen Fisher did not earn a decision in 5 2/3 innings of work for Plattsburgh, permitting three runs off five hits while striking out six. Freshman pitcher Taylor Smith wound up sustaining the loss in two-thirds of an inning of work.
