Softball Set to Host Mount Saint Mary on Wednesday

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball is set to host a doubleheader against Mount Saint Mary College Wednesday, April 15 starting at 3 p.m. 
 
RECORDS: New Paltz enters the contest 12-7 overall… The Knights are 9-7 overall and host The Sage Colleges on Tuesday afternoon.
 

21137SCOUTING THE HAWKS (12-7): The Hawks are tied for fourth place in the SUNYAC after sweeping Potsdam and Plattsburgh this past weekend in two doubleheaders… On Friday, New Paltz topped the Bears 14-5 in game one including a nine-run second inning with a grand slam from junior designated player Nicole DeCosta… In game two, the Hawks ended the game in the tenth inning in a walk-off-fashion with an RBI single to left center field from junior pitcher Katie Rutcofsky… Junior outfielder Fallon Spriggs tied the program record for total season home runs with five… Spriggs and Nicole DeCosta also matched the single-game program record in home runs with two each… The Hawks continued their winning streak defeating Plattsburgh 8-4 and 5-4 in Saturday's doubleheader… Spriggs hit her sixth home run of the season, clinching the home run single-season program record… In game one, senior third-baseman Meg Brewer hit a grand slam in the bottom of the second to give the Hawks an early 6-1 lead… Senior catcher Shayna Burgess led the attack with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate including three RBI, three runs scored, two home runs and a stolen base… In game two, junior catcher Jordan Fiore hit a homerun to give the Hawks a 5-4 walk-off win…Brewer, Spriggs, Kiersten Carlomango, and Fiore all batted 2-for-3… Senior pitcher Erika Traina earned the win for the Hawks. 
 
INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS: Spriggs leads the SUNYAC in home runs (6), slugging percentage (.736), and is ranked third for RBI (17)… Traina is second the SUNYAC in saves (2)… Freshman Julia Perhacs leads the Hawks in hits (23) and runs (17)… Burgess leads the team in base running with six stolen bases.
 
TEAM STATISTICS: New Paltz leads the SUNYAC in batting average (.318), RBI (129), home runs (20), runs (136), and slugging percentage (.509) …The Hawks are ranked third in doubles (32) and second for triples (5). 
 

5834 SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS (9-7): Mount Saint Mary swept Old Westbury on Monday, winning game one 8-0 before taking game two, 11-2… In game one, freshman left fielder Courtney Barbara went 3-for-3… Senior catcher Stephanie Karcher finished 1-for-2… Freshman right fielder Taylor Canto went 2-for-3… In the second contest, junior third baseman Chelsea Dexter finished 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBI… Karcher also went 2-for-3… The Knights have scored 31 runs in the last three games… Mount Saint Mary has a 5-1 record within the Skyline Conference.
 
INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS: Dexter leads the team with a .529 batting average… Karcher has scored a team-high 16 runs and leads the squad with 21 hits and six doubles… Michelle Surdan has two homers and 16 RBI… In the circle, Cindy Connoly is 4-4 with a 1.08 ERA in 45 1/3 innings… Connoly has registered 61 strikeouts and just eight walks, holding opponents to a .212 batting average.
 
TEAM STATISTICS: The Knights are batting .325 and have a team ERA of 2.76, which leads the Skyline… Mount Saint Mary has a league-best .961 fielding percentage.
 
LAST MEETING: The Hawks swept the Knights when these two teams last met on April 17, 2013.
 

WHAT'S NEXT:  New Paltz will travel to Buffalo State on Friday, April 17 for a SUNYAC doubleheader… The Knights will travel to Long Island for a doubleheader against St. Joseph's College on Saturday, April 18 starting at 1 p.m.
