Women's Lacrosse Unable to Complete Comeback in 12-8 Loss to Vassar

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team rallied from a 4-0 deficit to start the game and tied the score three different times, but the Hawks were hurt by four Vassar College goals to close the contest in a 12-8 loss to the Brewers in a non-conference game Tuesday at the Old Turf Field.

Senior defender Julia Johnson (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) tied the score twice in the second half, netting her third and fourth goals of the season to give the Hawks significant momentum. Vassar, however, scored four times in the final 15:13 to escape with a 12-8 victory.

New Paltz drops to 2-8 overall with the loss and looks to get back in the win column on Thursday, April 16, at 4:30 p.m. against non-conference Mount Saint Mary College at the Old Turf Field. Vassar rises to 6-5 overall and next hosts Bard College in a Liberty League game on Saturday, April 18, at 4 p.m.

Vassar jumped out to a 4-0 lead early, receiving two goals from junior attacker/midfielder Kim Mulvehill and one goal each from senior defender Evie Toland and sophomore midfielder Sydney Spadinger. The Hawks bounced back, though, scoring four goals in an 8:03 span to tie the score at 4-all. Sophomore attacker Melissa Wagner (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) found the back of the net first with 15:15 on the clock, while junior midfielder Alexa Vitale (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall Central), senior attacker Kelsey Healy (Central Islip, N.Y./Bay Shore) and senior midfielder Lianne Valdivia (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) scored during the run as well.

Mulvehill cashed in on a pass from senior attacker Leigh Anne Baldwin with just 1:13 before halftime to give the Brewers a slight 5-4 lead heading into the intermission.

The two teams traded goals in the early goings of the second half, with junior attacker Isabelle Goldstein scoring just 45 minutes into the new period before Wagner registered a marker more than seven minutes later. Toland pushed the edge out to two less than a minute later before senior midfielder Carissa Citro (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) and Johnson scored back-to-back goals for New Paltz to tie the score at 7-all. While Goldstein scored with 16:28 remaining in regulation, Johnson countered 22 seconds later to knot the score at 8-all. Vassar, however, clamped down on defense down the stretch and scored four more times to come away with the win.

Vassar finished with a slight 30-21 edge in shots and a 15-7 cushion in draw controls. The Brewers went 12-for-15 on clear attempts, while the Hawks were 12-for-23 in transition.

Wagner and Johnson paced the Hawk attack with two goals each, while Vitale, Citro, Valdivia and Healy all scored once. Valdivia posted a strong stat line of four ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers.

Goldstein led Vassar with four goals and four assists, while Mulvehill netted three goals. sophomore attacker Julia Trudell and Goldstein controlled seven and five draws, respectively, while four Brewers finished with four ground balls.
