Citro Nets 100th Career Goal in Women's Lacrosse's 23-13 Win over MSMC

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Senior midfielder Carissa Citro (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) scored her 100th career goal and tied a single-game program record in the State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team's 23-13 victory over non-conference Mount Saint Mary College on Thursday afternoon at the Old Turf Field.

Citro needed just two goals entering the game to reach the vaunted 100-goal milestone, and she surpassed the century mark by netting a program-record-tying seven goals. Citro joins Talia Tesler (April 1, 2014 vs. Potsdam) and current teammate and senior midfielder Lianne Valdivia (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) (April 9, 2013 vs. Farmingdale State) as the only Hawks to find the back of the net seven times in a single game. Furthermore, Citro scored a program-record four free-position goals, which she achieved off six attempts.

Citro's 100-goal milestone puts her in elite company, as she becomes just the fourth New Paltz student-athlete to net at least 100 career goals.

New Paltz rises to 3-8 overall with the win and faces a tough test at the Old Turf Field on Saturday, April 18, when it hosts No. 4 SUNY Cortland. Mount Saint Mary drops to 7-6 overall with the loss and visits Farmingdale State College next on Saturday, April 18, at 3:30 p.m.

The Hawks climbed out of an early 3-0 hole, as they went on a 5-1 tear to mount a 5-4 advantage. New Paltz continued to find the net with ease as the half wore on, with Citro netting four goals in the final 9:06 of the half. Following a Mount Saint Mary score that drew the visitors within three at 10-7, senior attacker Kelsey Healy (Central Islip, N.Y./Bay Shore) scored a pair of goals with less than two minutes on the clock to give the Hawks a 12-7 lead heading into halftime.

Mount Saint Mary began to make things interesting in the early portion of the second half, pulling within four at 14-10 after going on a 3-2 surge, which included two woman-up goals. The Hawks broke free, however, midway through the half, tightening the screws on an offense that netted five straight goals to extend the lead to 19-10.

The Knights then traded goals with the Hawks in the final 10 minutes of the game, though New Paltz posted a 10-goal differential with less than two minutes remaining after back-to-back goals from sophomore attacker Sara Daly (New Paltz, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) and Healy, with Daly's score serving as the first of her collegiate career.

New Paltz finished with a 42-32 edge in shots and went 15-for-17 on clear attempts, while Mount Saint Mary won the draw control battle, 21-17.

Seven different Hawks scored in the game, with the bulk of the offense coming from Citro (seven goals and two assists) and Healy (six goals). Valdivia and senior defender Julia Johnson (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) each found the back of the net three times, while senior attacker Jackie Wilkom (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) scored twice. Senior defender Fatima Ismail (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) and Daly registered one goal apiece. Citro stuffed the stat sheet outside of the scoring categories, too, with five ground balls and five draw controls.

Mount Saint Mary's attack hinged on sophomore attacker Katie Gattoni, who scored eight goals on 11 shots. Junior defender Claire Duffy finished with 10 draw controls and four ground balls.

Senior goalkeeper Jackie Ulanoff (Northport, N.Y./Northport) had yet another game with a save percentage greater than .500, as she stopped 15 shots. Freshman goalkeeper Carly Lennon was saddled with the loss for the Knights, making 13 saves.
