Women's Lacrosse Downed, 21-4, By No. 4 Cortland

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team fell, 21-4, to No. 4 SUNY Cortland in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game Saturday afternoon at the Old Turf Field.

The Red Dragons, a national title contender, held the upper hand in many areas of the stat sheet, outgaining the Hawks in shots (38-6) and draw controls (21-6) while going a perfect 7-for-7 on clear attempts.

New Paltz falls to 3-9 overall (1-5 SUNYAC) with the loss and visits SUNY Oneonta next on Tuesday, April 21, at 4 p.m. Cortland rises to 14-1 overall (7-0 SUNYAC) and clinches the SUNYAC regular-season title with the win. The Red Dragons close out their regular season on Saturday, April 25, when they visit Buffalo State for a 1 p.m. opening draw.

It took Cortland 2:44 to open scoring, and the Red Dragons jumped out to an early 7-0 lead. Senior attacker Kelsey Healy (Central Islip, N.Y./Bay Shore) put the Hawks on the board with 5:17 left before halftime, but Cortland wound up scoring four more goals before the halftime intermission to mount an 11-1 advantage.

The Red Dragons continued to fire on all cylinders in the second half, though New Paltz ended up scoring three times.

Healy, senior midfielder Lianne Valdivia (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston), senior defender Julia Johnson (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and senior attacker Jackie Wilkom (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) all scored for the Hawks, while senior goalkeeper Jackie Ulanoff (Northport, N.Y./Northport) scooped up three ground balls.

For Cortland, senior midfielder Emma Hayes-Hurley and junior midfielder Ashley Gentile each scored six goals, while freshman attacker Hannah Elmer finished with two assists. Hayes-Hurley scooped up eight draw controls, while Gentile finished with four ground balls.

Ulanoff made 11 saves in the loss, while her counterpart, sophomore Jaclyn Beshlian, turned aside one shot in 45:25 of action.
