Women's Lacrosse Falls, 12-6, to No. 17 Geneseo

Box Score

ONEONTA, N.Y. – In what was its second game in three days, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team stood tall in a 12-6 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) loss to No. 17 SUNY Geneseo on Thursday afternoon at SUNY Oneonta's All College Field.

Though the Knights entered halftime with a seven-goal lead, New Paltz limited Geneseo to just three markers in the second half. The Knights finished with a 29-12 edge in shots, while both teams controlled 10 draws. New Paltz went 13-for-19 on clear attempts, while Geneseo went 18-for-24.

New Paltz falls to 2-4 overall (1-1 SUNYAC) and next hosts Buffalo State in its home opener on Saturday, April 4, at 1 p.m. at the Old Turf Field. Geneseo rises to 6-0 overall (1-0 SUNYAC) and faces a tough test on Saturday, April 4, when it visits No. 5 SUNY Cortland at 12:30 p.m.

Geneseo opened up a 4-0 lead just 5:01 into the contest, but the Hawks broke up the Knights' scoring with 23:29 left in the first half when sophomore attacker Melissa Wagner (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) converted on a free-position shot. Geneseo went on to score five straight goals to seize a 9-1 advantage, but two Hawk goals from senior attacker Kelsey Healy (Central Islip, N.Y./Bay Shore) in the final 10 minutes of the half cut the Knights' lead to 10-3 heading into the intermission.

The scoring slowed down in the second half, with Geneseo's freshman midfielder Erin Cregan netting the half's first goal 5:58 into the period. After a score by senior midfielder Carissa Citro (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place), the Knights found the net twice before New Paltz rounded out the game's scoring with goals by sophomore attacker Nicole Stackpole (North Bellmore, N.Y./W.C. Mepham) and Citro.

Citro and Healy paced the Hawk attack with two goals each, while Wagner and Stackpole each found the back of the net once. Senior midfielder Lianne Valdivia (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) controlled three draws, caused two turnovers and scooped up one ground ball to help New Paltz in the midfield.

For Geneseo, Cregan and junior midfielder Liz Felix led the charge with three goals apiece, while junior attacker/midfielder Tara Basile finished with two goals and four assists. Cregan impacted the game defensively, too, finishing with six caused turnovers.

Senior goalkeeper Jackie Ulanoff (Northport, N.Y./Northport) enjoyed yet another strong game between the pipes, turning aside 12 shots, while her counterparts combined to make two saves.
