NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team is set to travel to SUNY Oswego and SUNY Cortland from Tuesday-Wednesday, April 21-22 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action.
RECORDS: The Hawks are 14-11, 6-4 in SUNYAC play… Oswego is 3-17, 1-13 SUNYAC… Cortland is 24-10, 10-2 SUNYAC.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS (14-11, 6-4): The Hawks are off a 1-3 conference weekend against Buffalo State and Fredonia… In game one against Buffalo State, freshman outfielder
Danielle Bruno was the only player to record a hit but the Hawks fought back in game two… The Hawks were led by left fielder
Juliette Verso and sophomore shortstop
Kiersten Carlomagno, who both went 2-for-3
… Senior third baseman
Meg Brewer and junior outfielder
Fallon Spriggs both went 1-for-3 with one RBI each… In game one against the Blue Devils, the Hawks were led by junior designated player
Nicole DeCosta, who went 2-for-3… In game two, the Hawks turned it around and had 22 total hits in the 13-6 win… Outfielder
Julia Perhacs went 4-for-5 with an RBI, DeCosta also went 4-for-5 with three RBI, and Brewer went 4-for-5 with two RBI… Junior pitcher
Katie Rutcofsky earned the win with 2 2/3 innings of work.
INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS: Perhacs is ranked first in the conference for batting average (.469) and 16th for hits (30)… Spriggs is third in the conference for RBI (23) and is second for home runs (6)… Senior catcher/outfielder
Shayna Burgess is 22nd in the SUNYAC for RBI (15).
TEAM STATISTICS: The Hawks are second in the conference for batting average (.320) and fifth for runs (165)… New Paltz leads the SUNYAC for home runs (20) and RBI (158).
SCOUTING THE LAKERS (3-17, 1-13): The Lakers are coming off a tough, four-loss conference weekend against Cortland and Oneonta… In game one against Cortland, only one player had a hit for the Lakers, with junior Alexis Nasca hitting a double in the second inning… In the second game, the Lakers turned it around and were led by sophomore Melissa Mulvaney who batted 3-for-4 with three RBI… Nasca went 2-for-4 in the second game with two RBI… In game one against Oneonta, freshman Melanie Klauser and sophomore Ashley Lyman each had a hit for the Lakers… Game two was much the same as only four different players had one hit each… Nasca led the Lakers again by hitting a double and driving in the lone run.
INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS: Lyman is ranked 29th in the conference for batting average (.333) and Klauser is 33rd (.328)… Klauser is also 36th in the conference for hits (20).
TEAM STATISTICS: Oswego is eighth in the conference for batting average (.251) and slugging percentage (.329).
LAST MEETING: New Paltz and Oswego split the last times these teams met on April 6, 2014.
SCOUTING THE RED DRAGONS (24-10, 10-2): Cortland is fresh off a conference doubleheader win against Oswego… In the first game, pitchers Sarah Salamone and Katie Pitkin combined for a four-hit shutout and the Red Dragons were led offensively by sophomore first baseman Mikayla Shade who went 5-for-7 with six RBI in the doubleheader… Junior outfielder Diane Cork finished 2-for-3 in game one, while sophomore second baseman Rosie Phillips singled in a run… In game two, senior catcher Devyn Wilder led offensively for the Red Dragons going 2-for-2 with three runs driven in… Sophomore outfielder Niki Barbato also went 2-for-2 with two doubles and an RBI… The Red Dragons recorded 25 total hits on the day with 13 RBI.
INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS: Barbato is second in the conference for RBI (30) and Cork is fifth (22)… Jamie Bucci leads the team and is seventh in the SUNYAC for batting average (.412), first for runs (35), and first for hits (42)… Salamone leads all pitchers in the conference for ERA (1.52).
TEAM STATISTICS: The Red Dragons are first in the conference for runs (180) and second for hits (265)… Cortland is also second in the SUNYAC for RBI (151).
LAST MEETING: New Paltz split with Cortland, earning the program's first win over the Red Dragons since 1996, when these two teams last met on April 5, 2014.
WHAT'S NEXT: The Hawks are set to host Geneseo and Brockport this upcoming weekend from April 24-25… The Lakers travel to Potsdam on Saturday, April 25… Cortland travels to Potsdam and Plattsburgh for the weekend.
