Women's Lacrosse Falls to Oneonta, 22-13, in Penultimate Game of 2015

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team fell, 22-13, to SUNY Oneonta in its second-to-last State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game of the 2015 season at All College Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Despite the loss, New Paltz had some positive takeaways, including a 22-15 advantage in draw controls. The Hawks also possessed well in the face of a strong Red Dragon defense, going 8-for-14 on clear attempts. Oneonta outshot New Paltz, 44-22, and went 18-for-21 on clears.

New Paltz drops to 3-10 overall (1-6 SUNYAC) with the loss and hosts The College at Brockport in its final game of the season on Saturday, April 25, at 1 p.m. Oneonta rises to 7-9 overall (4-3 SUNYAC) with the win and hosts No. 19 SUNY Geneseo in its regular-season finale on Saturday, April 25, at 12 p.m.

Senior attacker Kelsey Healy (Central Islip, N.Y./Bay Shore) wasted no time putting the Hawks on the board, scoring just 20 seconds into the contest to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Oneonta answered with a six-goal tear, however, to build a 6-1 lead, but New Paltz found a way to claw back. After the two teams traded scores, Healy scored once and senior midfielder Carissa Citro (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) scored twice to draw the Hawks within two at 8-6. The Red Dragons netted five of the final six goals in the first half to enter the intermission with a 13-7 lead.

New Paltz continued to battle early in the second half, with Healy, senior midfielder Lianne Valdivia (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) and sophomore attacker Melissa Wagner (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) all scoring in the first 11:28 of the period to cut into the deficit. The Red Dragons answered by scoring four of the game's final six goals to seal the win.

Healy and Citro paced the Hawk attack by scoring five and four goals, respectively, while Valdivia contributed with three goals and three assists. Wagner also chipped in a goal for New Paltz. Citro controlled a game-high nine draws, while Healy scooped up three ground balls.

Freshman attacker Taylor Casey and senior midfielder Nikki Fioretti ignited a prolific Red Dragon offense, scoring seven and six goals, respectively. Senior attacker Jillian Donodeo tallied three goals and three assists to help out the attack, while sophomore attacker/midfielder Heather Fitzpatrick controlled five draws. Defensively, senior defender Marissa Makar caused five turnovers and picked up six ground balls.

Senior goalkeeper Jackie Ulanoff (Northport, N.Y./Northport) made 11 saves for the Hawks, while Oneonta's two goalkeepers combined for seven stops.
