Box Score NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team suffered a 20-11 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) setback to The College at Brockport on Saturday at the Old Turf Field in its 2015 season finale.
In a game that felt much closer than the final score indicated, the Golden Eagles held a slight 30-24 edge in shots, though the difference came off the draw, as Brockport finished with a 24-9 advantage in draw controls. The Golden Eagles also played well in transition, going 9-for-12 on clear attempts.
New Paltz finishes its season at 3-11 overall (1-7 SUNYAC) with the loss. Brockport earned the No. 4 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament with the win and rises to 9-6 overall (5-3 SUNYAC). The Golden Eagles will host fifth-seeded SUNY Oneonta in the quarterfinal round on Tuesday, April 28, at 4 p.m.
Brockport set the tempo early, scoring the first three goals of the game and five of the first six. A three-goal surge in the latter stages of the half staked the Golden Eagles to a 10-3 lead, but New Paltz cut into the deficit with back-to-back goals from senior midfielder
Lianne Valdivia (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) and senior defender
Julia Johnson (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point). The Golden Eagles received a score from freshman attacker Jessica Boddery with just 1:36 left before the intermission to give the visitors an 11-5 advantage at the half.
Johnson scored twice in the first five minutes of the second half to offset two Brockport goals, but the Golden Eagles put the game away with a six-goal stretch that spanned 15 minutes. The Hawks ended the game on a positive note, scoring four of the tilt's final five goals. New Paltz received a woman-down goal from junior midfielder
Alexa Vitale (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall Central) with 7:22 left in regulation, and after a Brockport goal, senior attacker
Jackie Wilkom (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West), Valdivia and senior attacker
Kelsey Healy (Central Islip, N.Y./Bay Shore) all found the back of the net to spell out the final score of 20-11.
Valdivia and Johnson each netted three goals to pace the Hawk offense, while Vitale scored twice. Sophomore attacker
Melissa Wagner (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley), Wilkom and Healy also scored for New Paltz, while Vitale added two assists. Valdivia aided the Hawks' cause in numerous facets of the game, collecting five ground balls, three caused turnovers and three draw controls.
Junior midfielder Makensie Schuber and senior attacker Nina Tassone keyed the Golden Eagles with four goals each, while Boddery netted three markers. Junior attacker Ciara McKeon played a crucial role in Brockport's success, controlling nine draws in reserve action.
