New Paltz jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning of play and increased that advantage to 5-1 after three innings of action. But Brockport used three crooked innings, including a nine-run fourth, to hand the Hawks the 16-7 defeat.
Freshman outfielder Jake Williams (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) began the game with a leadoff single to right and junior shortstop Andrew DiNardo (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) followed with a hit by pitch. In three straight at-bats, Sparacino, Bell and Hansen all notched base with hits, including a run-scoring double down the left field line by Hansen.
In the third frame, New Paltz enjoyed five consecutive hits as DiNardo, Diana, Sparacino, Bell and Hansen all recorded base knocks, with Hansen coming through with a two-RBI double to left field to hand the Hawks a 5-0 cushion.
Unfortunately, Brockport stormed back in the fourth and plated nine runs on eight hits to go ahead 10-5. New Paltz looked to rally in the seventh as Diana led off with a double to right center, Sparacino reached on a fielding error by Brockport's third baseman and junior Taylor Anderson (East New Market, Md./Cambridge-South Dorchester) cracked a single to center. Hansen drove in another run on a fielder's choice to cut into the Golden Eagle lead, 12-6.
In the eighth, New Paltz again scored another run to cut the deficit to 12-7. Sophomore Andrew Martini (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) ripped a leadoff double to right center and came around to score later on a fielding error by the Golden Eagle shortstop.
Brockport managed to score four runs on six hits in the bottom of the eighth to take a commanding 16-7 lead. Despite loading the bases with no outs in the top of the ninth, the Hawks were unable to score a run as Brockport forced three-straight fly outs to end the contest.
