Field Hockey Falls, 3-1, to No. 20 Rochester for First Loss of 2015

Box Score

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Fresh off a win over No. 11 Montclair State University from Wednesday, the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team was unable to topple two nationally-ranked foes in one week, as the Hawks sustained a 3-1 setback to the No. 20 University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

While New Paltz dominated the second half offensively with an 8-1 margin in shots over the final 35 minutes of play, Rochester ultimately won the game based on a three-goal first half, with the last score coming with 58 seconds to go before the intermission.

New Paltz drops to 4-1 overall with the loss and hosts Union (N.Y.) College next on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 4 p.m. Rochester, meanwhile, remains perfect at 4-0 with the win and next visits Utica College tomorrow at 1 p.m.

Senior forward Mimi Adar put the Yellowjackets on the board in the seventh minute, as she tapped in the ball from around four yards out unassisted. Adar struck again in the 22nd minute, poking a feed from sophomore midfielder Claire Dickerson into the back of the cage from around two yards out. Senior forward Michelle Relin rounded out Rochester's scoring in the 35th minute, as she tucked a ball inside the left post to hand the home team a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.

After several scoring opportunities in the second half, New Paltz finally broke through in the 55th minute, as freshman forward Rachel McLaughlin (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) fired a shot past the Rochester goalkeeper for the first goal of her career. The Hawks took three more shots and two more penalty corners down the stretch but were unable to chip away any further at Rochester's advantage.

New Paltz finished with a 16-14 edge in shots and a 9-6 cushion in penalty corners.

Senior goalkeeper Alayna Wageman (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) turned aside six shots in between the posts for the Hawks, while her counterpart, senior goalkeeper Tara Lamberti, made five saves for the Yellowjackets.
