Women's Volleyball Outlasts Fredonia, 3-2, in SUNYAC Opener

BUFFALO – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team kicked off State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action with a 3-2 (22-25, 17-25, 25-18, 25-23, 15-11), come-from-behind win over SUNY Fredonia in the first SUNYAC Pool Play weekend of the season on Friday night at the Buffalo State Sports Arena.
 
New Paltz needed all five sets to knock off Fredonia in what was a rematch of last season's SUNYAC title match. After dropping the first two sets, the Hawks reversed their fortunes in the third and fourth stanzas before capturing the deciding set by a 15-11 margin.
 
New Paltz rises to 9-6 overall (1-0 SUNYAC) with the win and continues on with SUNYAC Pool Play tomorrow with matches against SUNY Potsdam (10 a.m.) and SUNY Geneseo (12:30 p.m.). Fredonia drops to 12-3 overall (0-1 SUNYAC) with the defeat and contests host Buffalo State (10 a.m.) and SUNY Plattsburgh (3 p.m.) tomorrow.
 
New Paltz hit at a .104 clip for the match as a team and played well at the net defensively, finishing with 12 blocks. The Hawks also served well, landing eight aces.
 
Senior outside hitter Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) led the Hawks offensively with 23 kills and a .215 (23-9-65) hitting percentage, and she added 15 digs to complete a double-double. Sophomore setter Maddie Zwickl (Chester, N.Y./Warwick Valley) doled out 46 assists to help pace the offense, while junior liberos Anna Paulik (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), Rachel Pierson (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) and Meg Kinee (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) tallied 29, 19 and 16 digs, respectively, to lead the back row defensively. Junior middle hitter Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) finished with four total blocks (two solo, two assist) to fortify the front row defensively.
