Box Score 2 BUFFALO – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team finished out its first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Pool Play weekend with a pair of wins, topping SUNY Potsdam, 3-1 (25-11, 25-27, 25-18, 25-11), before downing SUNY Geneseo, 3-1 (25-15, 25-18, 24-26, 25-22), on Saturday at the Buffalo State Sports Arena.
New Paltz rises to 11-6 overall (3-0 SUNYAC) with the victories and now has won 21 consecutive SUNYAC matches dating back to the implementation of the non-divisional conference schedule in 2013. Potsdam drops to 4-11 (0-2 SUNYAC) with the loss and visits St. Lawrence University next on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m., while Geneseo drops to 7-9 overall (1-1 SUNYAC) and next contests Alfred State College and Houghton College in a tri-match on Saturday, Oct. 3.
New Paltz 3, Potsdam 1 The Hawks hit at a .285 clip against the Bears and limited Potsdam to .071 hitting in their first match of the day while also holding the upper hand in blocks (7-0) and service aces (16-9).
Senior outside hitter
Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) continued to show why she is the defending SUNYAC Player of the Year, as she hit .308 (16-4-39) while adding 14 digs to complete the double-double and six service aces. Sophomore setter
Maddie Zwickl (Chester, N.Y./Warwick Valley) also posted a double-double with 50 assists and 13 digs, while junior middle hitter
Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) registered 10 kills and four total blocks (three solo, one assist). Other double-digit dig compilers included junior liberos
Anna Paulik (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh),
Rachel Pierson (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) and junior libero
Meg Kinee (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) with 23, 14 and 13 digs, respectively.
For Potsdam, sophomore utility player Rachel Topf and junior outside hitter Stephanie Maddox floored 11 and 10 kills, respectively, while freshman setter Brianna Rodda doled out 23 assists.
New Paltz 3, Geneseo 1 In the nightcap, New Paltz took the first and second sets by comfortable margins, and after Geneseo took the third stanza, the Hawks prevailed by a 25-22 final in the fourth.
Borquist paced the Hawk offense with 21 kills and a .236 (21-8-55) hitting percentage, and she added 23 digs to complete the double-double. Zwickl's 50 assists and 17 digs also was good for a double-double, while sophomore outside hitter
Veronica Matedero (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) and Roessler tallied 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Paulik provided a team-best 25 digs.
