NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Senior forward
Kayla McKeveny (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) netted a penalty stroke goal in the first half of action but the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey squad fell to visiting No. 9 Rochester 2-1 in non-conference play on Saturday afternoon at North Turf Field.
McKeveny successfully converted her penalty stroke opportunity in the 21
st minute to give the Hawks (7-3) a 1-0 lead. The score was her eighth of the season and gives her 37 career goals and 94 career points as she closes in on the top of the all-time scoring list in program history.
The Yellow Jackets (10-0), however, knotted the game at 1-1 in the 24
th minute as the contest remained tied at halftime. Rochester tallied a goal in the 45
th minute to hand New Paltz the tough, one-goal defeat.
Overall, the Hawks held a slim lead in shots (9-8) and corner attempts (10-8). Junior keeper
Megan Gangewere (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) made five stops for New Paltz.
McKeveny paced the attack with a team-high three shots (two on target) while sophomore forward
Serena Capsello (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), junior forward
Justine O'Reilly (West Sayville, NY/Sayville) and junior midfielder
Hayley Kim (West Hurley, NY/Onteora) all had two shots apiece.
The Hawks will now prepare to host non-conference Stevens on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m.
