NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – In their first meeting since last season's SUNYAC title game, the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team lost their SUNYAC regular season finale to visiting SUNY Cortland by a score of 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at North Turf Field.
The Hawks (9-6, 5-1 SUNYAC) will enter the 2016 SUNYAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed and will host No. 3 seed SUNY Geneseo (8-8, 4-2 SUNYAC) in the semifinal round on Wednesday, Nov. 2. at 2 p.m. With the win, Cortland (12-3, 6-0 SUNYAC) clinched the No. 1 seed and will host No. 4 seed SUNY Oneonta (4-10, 3-3 SUNYAC) in the semifinals. Senior forward
Kayla McKeveny (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) opened the scoring in the fourth minute with her eighth goal of the season to give New Paltz a 1-0 lead.
That score stood until the 48
th minute when Red Dragons sophomore forward Jessica Welsh tied the game off an assist from senior forward Gabby Stein. Cortland took the lead for good in the 59
th minute when junior forward Anna Branch tapped in a goal off a feed from sophomore forward Jess Gibaldi.
The Hawks held a slight advantage in shots over the Red Dragons, 10-8 while Cortland held an advantage in shots on goal (5-4) and corners at 10-6.
Senior forward
Erin Landy (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem Central) led the team with four shots, two of which were on goal. Junior forward
Justine O'Reilly (West Sayville, NY/Sayville) was right behind her with three shots, one of which was on goal. McKeveny fired off two shots, while junior midfielder
Hayley Kim (West Hurley, NY/Onteora) chipped in with one shot.
Junior goalkeeper
Megan Gangewere (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) made three stops in the cage.
New Paltz next travels to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Wednesday, Oct. 26 as they will face the Engineers at 5 p.m. in a non-conference tilt.
