TROY, N.Y. – Freshman forward
Kaitlyn Gunter (Schuylerville, N.Y./Schuylerville) notched two goals in the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team's non-conference match up against the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Wednesday afternoon but the Hawks ultimately fell, 4-2, to the host Engineers.
RPI (9-7) outshot New Paltz by an 18-15 margin but the Hawks held a 6-5 advantage in penalty corners.
The Engineers broke open the scoring in the fifth minute of game play off of a rebound shot by sophomore back Taylor Clink for a 1-0 lead at halftime. Junior attacker Megan Jones added her own goal in the 50
th minute to put the Engineers up 2-0 but New Paltz responded minutes later as Gunter knocked in a shot to cut the score to 2-1.
RPI increased their lead with another goal by Jones in the 60
th minute before Gunter added her final goal to make it a 3-2 game. However a last second goal in the 70
th minute by sophomore attacker Mikaela DiBello cemented the final 4-2 victory for RPI.

Kayla McKeveny (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) led the offensive charge, firing off five shots for the day. Junior midfielder
Hayley Kim (West Hurley, N.Y./Onteora) recorded three shots while Gunter and senior forward
Erin Landy (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) each had two shots for the Hawks. Junior goalie
Megan Gangewere (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) made seven saves in the cage.
DiBello recorded six shots for the Engineers with Clink adding three shots of her own. Sophomore net minder Rachel Kaufman had six stops in goal to earn the win.
The Hawks (9-7) return home to the North Turf Field on Saturday, Oct. 29 to face Vassar College at 1 p.m. in their regular season finale and Senior Day.
