ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Senior guard/forward
Kit Small (Slingerlands, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Names) became the fourth-ever State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball player to eclipse the 1,000 career point mark. Small notched 16 points, for a total of 1,011, in the Hawks' 88-76 loss to No. 7 ranked host University of Rochester on Friday evening in the first day of the Chuck Resler Tournament.
The Hawks fall to 1-1 on the season and will move on to play the University of Mount Union tomorrow at 3 p.m. in the consolation round. Rochester moves up to 2-0 and will take on the University of Scranton in the final tomorrow at 8 p.m.
New Paltz edged Rochester 18-16 at the end of the first quarter and would surrender the lead briefly in the second quarter as the Yellowjackets put up a 25-22 score. A fastbreak layup by Small set the Hawks back out front by a margin of 26-25 before freshman guard
Marion Dietz (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) put up nine points to push New Paltz ahead 36-27. Senior forward
Courtney Irby (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) followed up with several key points to hand New Paltz a 40-30 cushion at intermission.
Rochester started to chip away at the score at in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 51-50 before jumping ahead, 54-51, off of the charity stripe with under 40 seconds left to play. Sophomore guard
Lindsay Bettke (Pelham, N.Y./The Ursuline School) sank a jumper to close the gap by one point but Rochester would continue to hold the advantage heading into the final period.
Despite slicing the deficit to 83-74 with 45 seconds left in the game, Rochester maintained a double-digit lead to seal the final 88-76 win over the Hawks.

New Paltz shot 36.6 percent from the field (21-of-71) and 67.7 percent from the line (21-of-31) while grabbing 15 points off of the bench and collecting 19 points off of turnovers. Rochester shot 49.2 percent from the field (30-for-61) and held a 45-36 edge in rebounds.
Dietz paced the Hawks' offense with 20 points while shooting 11-of-12 at the foul line. Irby added 17 points for the night while Small chipped in three steals and two assists. Senior guard
Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
For Rochester, junior forward Alexandra Leslie led the way with a double-double 26 points and 14 rebounds while junior guard Lauren Deming also notched a double-double, scoring 20 points and pulling down 12 boards for the night.
