Box Score MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team was unable to quell a high-powered Rhodes College offense, as the Hawks fell to the Lynx, 17-5, in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon at Mason Field.
Rhodes held the upper hand in shots (31-19), draw controls (14-10) and ground balls (20-16). The Lynx went 7-for-10 in clear attempts, while the Hawks went 5-for-9.
New Paltz falls to 2-5 overall with the loss and next visits Farmingdale State College on Tuesday, March 29, at 6 p.m. Rhodes rises to 8-2 and next visits Hendrix College in Southern Athletic Association (SAA) action next on Saturday, March 26, at 2 p.m. (CDT).
After Rhodes scored the first two goals of the game, junior midfielder
Alexa Criollo (Queens, N.Y./Forest Hills) closed the gap to one with a score just over a minute later. The Lynx then buried three markers before Criollo scored again midway through the first half. Rhodes closed the half with eight unanswered goals to enter the intermission with a 13-2 advantage.
Following a Lynx goal to open the second half, New Paltz received back-to-back scores from sophomore attacker
Caitlyn Morris (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and freshman midfielder
Rachael Purtell (Minetto, N.Y./Oswego). Rhodes scored three of the final four goals of the game to spell the final score of 17-5.
Criollo led the Hawk offense with two goals, while Purtell, Morris and junior attacker
Melissa Wagner (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) added one score each. Purtell finished with four draw controls, while Morris scooped up five ground balls.
For Rhodes, sophomore attacker Kendall Cunningham and freshman midfielder/defender Daly Colorossi scored four goals apiece, while sophomore midfielder Ashley Doyle dished out two assists. Doyle also stuffed the box score with five draw controls, four ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Junior goalkeeper
Colleen Roemer (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane) made 11 stops for New Paltz in the loss, while Rhodes' sophomore goalkeeper Katherine Tooley registered 10 saves in the win.
