NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Competing in its first home State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game of the season, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team fell, 18-5, to SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday afternoon at the North Turf Field.
Potsdam finished with a 31-19 edge in shots, and the Bears committed 18 turnovers to the Hawks' 15. New Paltz went 14-for-20 on clear attempts, while Potsdam was 17-for-20. The Hawks scooped up 18 ground balls to the Bears' 16, but Potsdam finished with a 19-6 edge in draw controls.
New Paltz drops to 3-8 overall (0-3 SUNYAC) with the loss and next hosts SUNY Fredonia on Saturday, April 16, at 1 p.m. Potsdam rises to 6-4 overall (2-1 SUNYAC) with the win and next visits The College at Brockport on Saturday, April 16, at 1 p.m.
The Hawks got on the board first 1:21 into the game, as junior midfielder
Nicole Gottschalk (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) scored unassisted. Potsdam then scored 10 unanswered goals to close the half and enter the intermission with a 10-1 advantage.
New Paltz hung with Potsdam early in the second half, as junior midfielder
Alexa Criollo (Queens, N.Y./Forest Hills) answered a Bear goal just 2:40 into the period with one of her own minutes later to keep the deficit under 10. Following a Potsdam score, sophomore attacker

Colleen Jones (Ardsley, N.Y./Hackley School) netted back-to-back markers to draw within eight at 12-4. The Bears wound up scoring six of the game's final seven goals to spell the final score of 18-5.

For Potsdam, junior attacker/midfielder Murphy Newman and senior attacker/midfielder Bri McClusky led the way with nine (seven goals and two assists) and six (one goal and five assists) points, respectively. McClusky impacted the game beyond scoring, too, with four draw controls and three ground balls.
Roemer made nine saves in the loss for New Paltz, while junior goalkeeper Devan Olschewske and freshman goalkeeper Katie Longamore combined for nine stops in the win for Potsdam.
