Softball Splits Doubleheader with Buffalo State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team split with Buffalo State in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Mary Gray Deane Field, winning, 3-2, in game one before falling, 6-0, in the nightcap.

New Paltz moves to 12-9 overall with the results and next visits Mount Saint Mary College for a 3 p.m. non-conference twinbill on Wednesday, April 20, at 3 p.m. Buffalo State moves to 9-13 overall (2-6 SUNYAC) with the results and next hosts Nazareth College in a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday, April 19.

Game 1: New Paltz 3, Buffalo State 2

A two-run sixth inning helped the Hawks edge the Bengals in the front end of the twinbill.

In the sixth, sophomore left fielder Julia Perhacs (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) led off the inning with a double to left center before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Senior pitcher Katie Rutcofsky (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy) then singled up the middle to drive in Perhacs before junior designated player Nicole DeCosta (Stormville, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) moved her into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Rutcofsky ended up on third following a fielder's choice during the next at-bat, and she came across on a fielder's choice the very next play to put New Paltz on top, 3-2. The Hawks ended the game with a double play to the third baseman in the top of the seventh, which sealed the win.

Buffalo State scored first, with junior center fielder Laura Crooks coming home on a wild pitch in the first inning. Rutcofsky drove in Perhacs with a double up the middle in the fourth, but the Bengals drove in a run with a groundout in the fifth to take the lead.

Perhacs led the Hawk offense by going 3-for-3 with three doubles and two runs scored, while Rutcofsky batted 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Perhacs' three doubles matched a single-game program record, which she already had a share of with a three-double performance against York (N.Y.) College last season.

Senior second baseman Stephanie Novo and Crooks each went 3-for-4 with a run scored to lead the Bengals offensively in game one.

Rutcofsky earned the win in the circle for New Paltz, yielding two runs (one earned) off seven hits and two walks while striking out three, while senior pitcher Jordan Sarat shouldered the loss for Buffalo State, giving up three runs off six hits and two walks.

Game 2: Buffalo State 6, New Paltz 0

Buffalo State's bats came alive in game two, scoring six runs off 10 hits to salvage the split.

The Bengals got on the board in the first inning, as sophomore right fielder Danielle Szymkowiak drove in Crooks with a single to right. Senior third baseman Jean Stahl made it a 3-0 game in the third, driving in two runs with a double to center field, while Buffalo State pushed the margin to 5-0 with two runs scoring on a dropped fly in the sixth. The Bengals scored once more in the seventh to provide the final score.

Junior pinch hitter/first baseman Kiersten Carlomagno (Commack, N.Y./Commack) keyed the Hawk attack by going 2-for-2 with a double, while Stahl led Buffalo State with a 4-for-4 performance that included two RBI, two doubles and a run scored.

Junior pitcher Taylor Corwin (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) gave up six runs (three earned) on 10 hits and three walks in the loss, while senior pitcher Lexi Haley earned the win in the circle for Buffalo State, permitting four hits while striking out six in a complete-game shutout.
