Women's Lacrosse Hangs Tough in 15-4 Setback against Fredonia

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team hung tough against an athletic SUNY Fredonia squad in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest on Saturday afternoon at the North Turf Field, but the Blue Devils used a six-goal surge in the second half to pull away for a 15-4 victory.

Down 7-1 with around four minutes to go in the first half, New Paltz relied on a score from sophomore attacker Kelsey Aeberli (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) to draw the Hawks within five at 7-2. Fredonia countered with a goal 59 seconds before halftime and took an 8-2 advantage into the intermission. Coming out of the break, the Hawks won the draw, and junior midfielder Alexa Criollo (Queens, N.Y./Forest Hills) scored just 24 seconds into the new period to pull New Paltz back within five. The Blue Devils, however, scored six straight goals before Aeberli registered her second marker of the day with 8:07 remaining in regulation to break up Fredonia's scoring spree. The Blue Devils scored a woman-up goal with 4:44 left to spell the final score of 15-4.

New Paltz falls to 3-9 overall (0-4 SUNYAC) with the loss and next hosts SUNY Oswego on Thursday, April 21, at 4 p.m. Fredonia rises to 5-8 overall (1-3 SUNYAC) with the win and next visits SUNY Geneseo on Tuesday, April 19, at 4 p.m.

Fredonia scored the first two goals of the game before sophomore attacker Caitlyn Morris (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) put New Paltz on the board, scoring off of a feed from junior midfielder Nicole Gottschalk (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury). The Blue Devils scored five straight goals before Aeberli scored her marker that cut the deficit to five late in the first half.

Fredonia finished with the upper hand in shots (23-13), ground balls (15-11) and draw controls (12-9). The Blue Devils also went 10-for-11 on clear attempts, while the Hawks went 3-for-4 on clears in the second half.

Aeberli led the New Paltz offense with two goals, while Gottschalk registered a goal and an assist. Criollo also scored for the Hawks. Gottschalk stuffed the stat sheet beyond her scoring numbers with five ground balls, three draw controls and one caused turnover.

For Fredonia, senior attacker Katie Miller scored five times, while freshman midfielder Jade Williams recorded three goals and two assists. Sophomore midfielder Audrey Yokopovich provided a strong game on both ends of the field, tallying five points (two goals, three assists) on offense while controlling six draws, causing four turnovers and scooping up four ground balls.
