Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team fell to SUNY Geneseo, 20-3, in the 2016 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at College Stadium.
Geneseo finished with the upper hand in shots (39-10), draw controls (15-9), ground balls (12-5) and free-position shots (13-2). New Paltz did, however, carry the ball well in transition, going 6-for-9 on clear attempts.
New Paltz drops to 3-6 overall (0-1 SUNYAC) with the loss and next hosts SUNY Oswego on Tuesday, April 5, at 4 p.m. Geneseo rises to 6-3 overall (1-0 SUNYAC) with the win and visits Buffalo State on Tuesday, April 5, at 4 p.m.
New Paltz scored the first goal of the game 3:10 into the contest, as junior attacker
Melissa Wagner (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) found the back of the net off a feed from junior midfielder
Nicole Gottschalk (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury). Geneseo then netted 12 unanswered goals to enter halftime with a 12-1 lead before scoring three more early in the second half to mount a 15-1 advantage. Sophomore attacker
Caitlyn Morris (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) broke the scoring spree with a goal eight minutes into the second half, and following four more Knight scores, Morris scored again with 3:43 left in the contest. Geneseo provided a marker 1:35 later to spell the final score of 20-3.
Morris keyed the Hawk attack with two goals, while Wagner scored once. Freshman midfielder
Rachael Purtell (Minetto, N.Y./Oswego) controlled five draws and scooped up two ground balls, while Wagner caused a turnover.
For Geneseo, sophomore midfielder Erin Cregan and senior attacker Erin Down led the way with five and four goals, respectively, while freshman midfielder Carly Cullen distributed two assists. Senior midfielder Liz Felix finished with five draw controls, while freshman midfielder Maddie Lee and junior midfielder Lauren Corbett picked up three ground balls apiece.

Colleen Roemer (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane) made 11 saves in the loss for New Paltz, while senior goalkeeeper Claudia Coleates and freshman goalkeeper Tess McFadden combined for five stops for Geneseo.
